Finally, just in case this helps at all. Here is what it says on the status tab of my AM300:

DSL Status:	UP
DSL Modulation Mode:	Auto
DSL Path Mode:	FAST
Downstream Rate:	832 Kbps
Upstream Rate:	512 Kbps
Downstream Margin:	12 db
Upstream Margin:	16 db
Downstream Line Attenuation:	38
Upstream Line Attenuation:	29
Downstream Transmit Power:	15
Upstream Transmit Power:	10
LOS Errors:	0

That Downstream rate was always between 710 and 740 before.

Hi Aaron, those sync speeds look very bad. I would suspect the house wiring has a high chance of being at fault here. You could try another router, but my guess is that would be the same. I'm sure I could fit a Northcote job in for a fellow geekzoner if you need help here. Running a fresh cable from the demarc to the router is the best way to ensure the reliability of a N-DSL connection, so would be worth doing either way.

Hi CB. It makes sense to me that either the line or modem is the issue. It's actually dropping out every few minutes and I pretty much have to reboot both the modem and router for it to reconnect.

Is it actually possible for the line to be so bad that dropouts happen in this manner?

I have now tried 3 different jacks around the house. Very consistant results. I'm trying to find another modem thru a mate. Is it worth trying to turn half bridging off onthe AM300? I'm not even sure what that is, but it's one of the first things I did.

I'll wait to hear what the Xnet fellas have to say, but I may PM you about the wiring after that.

Half bridge measn your modem simply passes the IP address to the device after the modem rather than the modem having the IP address plus having an internal network IP address. It also removes the double NATting, because the modem will not do NAT any more.

I'm running in half bridge mode (with different hardware) and need to boot my router before I boot my modem, else the router does not get the IP address from the modem. You might have a similar problem with your setup. When the modem is plugged into a PC then the PC will keep on requesting for an IP address until it gets it so it does not suffer the same problem.

Well, this may be a little premature, and perhaps a complete coincidence due to another variable, but the internet connection has stabilized somewhat tonight.

All I did when I got home was plug in a brand new ADSL line filter between the AM300 and the jack. Does this make sense to anyone?

Speeds are still the same, but the internet has been connected for about 2 hours 15 mins, and only cut off once when I attempted to make a phone call. Been able to load a few youtube vids, which was impossible before without a definate dropout. Emails coming through pretty quick from my server in London. I have the necessities it seems!

This is up from dropping connection just a few minutes after connecting.

Sync Speeds still the same as a few posts up, and looks like using the phone might give the whole thing the boot, so still some work to do. (Cheers CB, I'll be in touch soon - I have to talk to the landlord about the wiring first)

Any thoughts on the line filter stabilizing it all? Or pass off as a cowinkidink?

Some filters are better than others, so if you had a filter on before, and now a different one, there may be a slight difference. However, if you are on N-DSL, there should be NO filter used at all. Oh and definitely not the ADSL router plugged into the "filtered" side of the filter.
If WxC put through the request for the analyzer, then Telecom may have changed you power profile, and this may have helped. But the upshot is, you still have a big problem.

I've just come across your thread. You haven't made a new post for a while, I'm hoping that means you've got the problem solved and enjoying nDSL and VoIP with Xnet.

I've got an exact same setup as you and it has been running really well for me so far. It's a shame that you've run into problems. I have also had a few glitches during my setup process but the kind members and Xnet staffs on this forum have helped me out the same way as they have on this thread.

If you haven't resolved the issue yet I am happy to lend you my spare modem so to isolate the cause of your problem. I am often in Auckland City, which area are you at?

Thanks very much for the offer Kenshiro. But I was able to borrow a Dlink 504G (In fact I bought one of these on TM for $40 as I found it far more stable than the AM300.

My problem is "kinda" solved. The reason I havn't been in here is because I've been just so damn busy.

The part solution was acheived only yesterday anyway. Taken a while looking at the date of my first post here, but Xnet have been great.

What they did was put an analysis on our line. I beleive they get Telecom to do this. I did have to call back 5 times to check the status of the analysis, It seemed to be never complete, or not actioned. Took around 15 days actually.

They ended up putting our line into an ADSL 1 port at the exchange (the way I understand it). Definately more stable. Uptime of 8 continuous hours last night, and I havn't checked today.

Unfortunately, no change for speeds. Downstream rate at the modem is still never more than 800 Kbs. Xnet asked me to report on the changes, which I will do after a couple of days of monitoring. But I think the answer will be "More stable but still dreadfully slow". Webpages outside NZ are near-on unusable.

Is 800 Kbps your router sync speed? This is very bad, and since they have changed your port and you have swapped out the router, then this very much now points to a line fault. All the line analyzer, port change & router have done is just stabilised your "bad" connection.

Sounds like you still have an issue that needs fixed.
