maverick: One thing of real importance to note is that when you are feed from the cabinet it drastically effects any performance of exchange based DSL services due to loss through the cabinet as they will have to pass through the cabinet, however you will see greatly improved services feed directly from the cabinet as the loop is now shorter...unless someone goofed big time Smile

Hint hint: drop the PSTN line for N-DSL + VoIP, through a provider (no names) who can provide you with some kind of Fusion of services Wink

How big are these cabinets?

Will they sit on the nature strip like the electrical ones or will they hidden away somewhere?

The cabinets used are the same/similar as have been used for some years now.

The above image shows one that was recently installed in Point Chev. Where older (and smaller) joint cabinets are upgraded I think you will find the old joint cabinet will remain and a new Cabinet as above added and cross patched to the existing cables.

When can the public expect to see connections changed over from exchange? Is it deployed as cabinets are built locally or once it's finished natinoally, like ADSL 2+?

The impact would not be that significant.  The sheer majority of copper loop out there passes through at least one jointing cabinet today; replacing it with (or adding) another is unlikely to degrade service that much.  In some cases, it might even improve it where cabinet->exchange copper is replaced with new.

If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated - I've been trying to figure out how my connection is wired in Parnell.

We have what looks like a cabinet (except it's Grey) by the Church on Parnell road, I am on Birdwood Cresent. I connect about 6.5MBits but never used to get over 4 Megabit's until a month or so ago.

My number (when I had one before churning to fusion) began with 093585 which by Telecom's exchange listing hangs off Mayoral Drive exchange.

The cabinet up the road has been there for longer than 2 years, so I'm not sure if it's a Telecom cabinet (It looks the same as a full cabinet, but the same colour as the TelstraClear ones deployed in Mt Wellington industrial area.)

I'm not on ADSL2, and my speeds appear to always have problems, but I'm within spitting distance of the city, and can see Victoria St (and Shortland St, Hello WXC)

Does anyone know if I'm on a old school Conkin?

Makes me sad... Just checked the new list, the website doesn't list Parnell as a suburb, but the spreadsheet does and it's all bad news, looks like Parnell in the heart of Auckland city will be modernised to ADSL2 in over 3 years. Damn ADSL3 will be out by then.
Time to move to ponsonby.

Actually it is very significant, a fact that was highlighted at the wholesale briefing session last week, after the session I also inquired into some real world examples from the installation group.....trust me the losses are very significant.

A quoted real world example was a drop from a 2.4 Meg connection to a 700K connection

Interesting.  This has not been my experience with another very large cabinetisation project (more ports than there are people in NZ), so I'm not quite sure what TNZ are doing that would cause this to occur.

Surely passing through the cabinet means that an old Exch to Junction box pair is used to jumper the sub 5m or less back to and from the new cabinet (assuming its a new cabinet at an old Junction site) I would be most surprised if this had any  significant impact, were talking  at most 5-10m of cable and a extra couple of Block joints/patchs, pretty trival stuff.

Yes, if there's no mid-point injection.  You might even see an improvement (due to new copper being used, rather than old and possibly dodgy stuff).

As Maverick pointed out, there are impacts when mid-point injection is being used.  With properly engineered spectral shaping and management, the impacts can be trivialised.  This is one of the reasons why the Spectrum Management Plan is so important.

I also was pretty suprised by the information and was one of thereasons I went and tried to confirm this with network people doing the work, and as I said they confrimed it was significant as well as giving me a couple of real world examples, so was something I thought I should let people know in case they were interested.

You have highlighted a very good point and I absolutely agree with you on this PenultimateHop..Spectrum Management is incredibly important some one in the paper in a very Senior postion I think was quoted as saying "it's a bit of guess work and not that necessary" or words to that effect I was stunned by this and the thing about when people that don't actually know start saying things like this in the press it sets wrong expectations.

Did Telecom put together some kind of Spectrum Management plan, quite some time ago? I think around the time of "unleashed". What happened? Was this kind of shot down by a few other ISP's?
