Xnet Fusion doesn`t limit you to ADSL 1, but I think the non-naked DSL plans do, like Flood. But guys, I`d be jumping out of my skin if I got anywhere near 2 mbps even at peak times hehe.

I've been a loyal customer for 3 years and been very happy up till 6 months ago.
International performance declining daily.
Joined to torrent plan when old plan lapsed.Obviously this plan designed to free up peak time but peak time still average and now late evening and after midnight is bad bad bad.
What happened to days of uninterupted streaming videos.
Off to europe for 6 weeks.If its not sorted when i get back will sadly be taking my business to another isp provider.

I have also noticed that after 12am it has become quite bad, I use ventrillo on an overseas server and my ping goes from 300ms before 12am to an inconsistant 1800-5000ms after 12am - essentially unusable (on weekends anyway, 12am is too late for me on a weeknight!). I guess this is when the torrent plan users start to get active. If these offpeak times are getting congested I hope Xnet starts to increase it's international bandwidth to compensate.

Still it's better than it was a few months ago where I would get the terrible ventrillo performance during regular peak hours, and the other benefits from being an Xnet customer are enough to keep me happy for now.

Hmm, im not 100% sure but it seems that my DSLAM (exchange) is limmited to around 4-5Mbit a second, ive never seen anything over 520KB\s downstream untill I got FLS upload, the extra upload bandwith has helped to speed up my downloads as the OVERHEAD is no longer choked / limmited to around 10KB\s ( I have bad upload problems )
but ive only gained a small incress of 120KB\s for a max speed 640KB\s, im not complaining i know that my Exchange is limmited.

Increseing the Recive window in window networking settings can decreese the ammount of overhead needed for large downloads, at the cost of adding latency to your games since they use Small packets for faster transfering of data, Cheack ur upload rate while doing a Xnet speed test! if its reaching ur max upload speed!

chances are tho that if your not getting close to your line limmit when doing an XNET speed test " http://www.xnet.co.nz/speedtest/ " during off-peak times its probly ur exchange limmiting you, im sure thats coverd under Telescums QOS/Fair Usage stuff that any ISP would be required to agree to before being allowed access to there hardware

Ive never noticed having no less than 100KB\s download speed during midnight off-peak times, download speed does seem to be selective about how fast from what internatonal servers, for instance some servers for game demos creep along at 7KB\s and some fluctuate around the 20KB\s mark but that was while I was downloading distros and combined its 100KB\s of traffic,

Furthermore i know that there are alot of high-usage ppl in the area that are on my exchange, its VERY possible thats the reason for this slow night time speeds, perhaps you are in a simmiluer situation where it isnt ur isp but also ur Exchnage and the ammount of bandwidth shared between ur local community internet users

Forgive me and corrcet me if im just woffling on about CR*P and should just shut up :) this is just the regurgitation of MY findings and what ive read around the In-ta-ma-web, that and im lacking 5 hours sleep :)

Hi, the peak-time international speed debacle is definitely all about each individual ISP`s willingness to provide international bandwidth. Xnet has also acknowledged that they`re simply not willing to pay for more international bandwidth, because that would bite into their profit margins.

I used to be with Telecom Xtra, living in the same place, and I was alawys perfectly able to stream Youtube clips, all day and night, every day of the year. But since I`ve gone to Xnet, I`ve needed to change my internet usage habits, because of this issue. So I now dowload clips from youtube, instead of streaming them, and generally avoid everything at peak times which would require a lot of bandwidth, like streaming video.

I think most, if not all of these small ISP`s have these issues. Telecom is good speed-wise, and possibly even Vodafone (though this is just an assumption), they may be a bit more efficient because of their size, therefore offering more international bandwidth.

Ahh i see, :) im still happy about the speeds I get for the price I pay, especily when compared to the limmits I would have when comparing to other ISP's plans

Yeah it`s still good value, once you come to terms with the limits. I would definitely move back to Xtra or check out Vodafone`s Red Network if I wanted to play shooters/racing games or watch streaming TV in the evenings, but at the moment I`m happy enough without those things, so it`s ok.

One difference between Xnet and some other ISP's is they don't shape traffic. So whether you are downloading p2p, an email or streaming YouTube, everyone contends for the bandwidth equally.

It's not equal. If I try to stream a youtube video it's one connection that stutters and times out, mean while some p2p leech has 50-100 connections pulling in as much data as their connection can handle so it's hardly equal.

I'd like to see xnet succeed and grow in to NZ's prefered ISP but at the moment they seem content to hold on to the leechers (the least profitable) and annoy/drive away off the most profitable users the ones that just surf/youtube and check email.

They need to suck it up and implement deep packet instpection/QOS to push p2p type apps to the bottom of the que then we'd all be so much happier.

youtube is as bad as P2P leeching! and most places that enforce QOS stuff limmit youtube as its large content in high demand

I guess thats what you get when you go to a cheap ISP you get lumped with all the leeching crowd, for instance I only use about 10GB month, so thats about $80 so I'm paying about $8 a GB on fusion compared to someone on the torrent plan who pays $49 a month on the torrent plan but downloading 75 before being charged for data hmm 0.63cents per GB... hmm go figure.. who's getting tucked?

hmm the arguement don't add up.

Users on torrent plan are restricted to off peak between 12 -8 am. using p2p
For them streaming utube / p2p outside this hour is $1.50 /Gig which cost more.

Mortman - the real geeks deeply encrypt their P2P and torrent packets anyway - which is exactly what I'd do if Xnet ever stooped to packet sniffing and subsequent shaping. If they already do this (and why wouldn't they?) then at least they don't overly handicap the speeds their users get. I pay for the data I use per GB, and I expect a reasonable performance. OK - I'm be happy if P2P and torrent traffic is reasonably managed and isn't top priority, but those ISPs who shape the heck out of P2P and torrent data so it's unusable can go bankrupt for all I care. And take the mom and pop emailers with them. Yes, those guys are indeed the most profitable customers for ISPs - but many of us users are more than happy to pay whatever it might take to be able to use the 'net for more purposes than just emailing or browsing facebook.

As a VoIP user on VFX I do also appreciate your QoS arguments - and can I just say that both P2P, torrents AND VoIP are generally exemplary on Xnet*. I don't know how they do it and remain one of the cheapest ISP's - but if more NZ ISP's were this good we wouldn't be lagging at the bottom of the OECD league tables.

* yes, youtube and other video content streaming does often stutter more than the guy in Pan's Labyrinth!
