see mike's post...

good day for Telecom

Cellular and wireless
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

It will work better on XT as its 850 where ever you get coverage. Voda has 2100 in 19 towns and cities I understand

Any views expressed here are my own and do not necessarily represent the views of my employer Telecom NZ

Still no tethering?

For billions of years since the outset of time, every single one of your ancestors survived, every single person on your Mum and Dads side, successfully looked after and passed onto you life.  What are the chances of that like?

The 8GB iphone 3G from Vodafone NZ currently costs NZ$979 without a plan while
it used to cost US$199 for the same phone in the US with a contract. So using my powers of theoretical maths:

(NZ$979/US$199)xUS$99=NZ$487

So maybe NZ$487

The phone is out in July in New Zealand

Any chance of Telecom getting it though.  I dont want to pay full price at Voda and then have to sign onto a XT contract (ie. miss out on rebate).

CJPhoto: What Frequencies does it run on. Is it like the old version that will run better on Telecom or are they putting out 2 versions (850 and 900mhz)?

As per their technical specification page, no changes - WCDMA 850/1900/2100 MHz, meaning 100% coverage on XT Network, and partial (2100 MHz only) coverage on Vodafone.

That's in one of the slides shown during the announcement.

Lets hope so. There are differences between the Aussie store and the NZ store which would suggest it *could* be coming to Telecom.

Go here: http://store.apple.com/nz/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTE2OTU

and look under the "Meet the iPhone Family" then change the nz to au in the url and see it has "Where to buy"

now...why would they not have "Where to buy" on the NZ one if it were just going to stay as Voda only??

Maybe they are waiting for Telecom to announce it then they will add that in.

Just speculation but.....

Cheers

lduncan: iPhone 3GS NZ release date is set for 9th of July. It's a staggered release around the world.

Thanks for update.  Where is the source?  (EDIT: answered above...)

I read:
Available June 19th in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. Launches will occur one week later in an additional six countries

was not sure if that meant 23rd June for NZ or later
EDIT: does anyone have the set of images from Macrumors etc

Looks good, but not sure if it's enough for me to swap over.

Digital compass will, however, make a nice addition to some apps i'm working on.

Hmm, anyone interested in a 16GB white iPhone 3G?

Incorrect speling should be punnished!!!

This sounds really interesting ... I would actually be tempted with a $500 iphone off contract on XT. Maybe need to lower my expectations! :-)
