Not sure if this may have being asked before, but I was wondering, when chorus build a cabinet near to my house, will I be able to be connected through the cabinet and still be with orcon, or will I have to change ISP ?

If you are on the + plans (Orcon's own LLU product) = no you can't be with Orcon+ on a cabinetised cabinet (yet), if you aren't on the plus plans = yes

I suspected as much. Look like when the day comes I'd end up choosing between orcon going through the exchange at 4mb sync or 10mb+ sync with telecom on the closer cabinet, intresting.

You will still be on Orcon, but use Telecom Wholesale, rather than Orcons DSLAMS.

You won't have a choice - once you are cabinetised you can't be connected directly to the exchange so your only choice is Telecom wholesale (which is currently all ADSL ISPs except Orcon+ and Vodafone Red (and Slingshots next big thing which is resold Vodafone Red)) - you can still be on Orcon but not on their + plans.

Still end up with the same outcome then. I'd be pretty stupid to stay on the orcon sitting at 7.6mb sync, when i could change isp and get more.

Who knows maybe orcon will do a deal in the future that allows their + network through the cabinet's. I'm not worried, I wont be cabitnized for years because apprently dead end towns right at the bottem of the country get higher priority than one of the countries most broadband populated suburbs, I was just inquisitive.

thanks for the info.

I don't doubt Orcon are keen to get into them but it's beings of higher power than them that are holding up the process . . .

how do you figure that?

If you get moved to a cabnet, you will end up on Telecom Wholesale, regardless of what ISP you are on.

You will get the same sync speed no matter what ISP, as they all use the same equipment in the cabnet.

Well, because I will be moved onto a cabinet, my connection will go through telecom wholesale. As scottjpalmer pionted out will force me to be moved onto Orcon's normal network, not the orcon+ network. This means irrelevant to what I really sync at, I affeticely will be restricted to ADSL1 speeds if I stick with Orcon.

No, because the cabinets will be ADSL2+.  So you will get much faster broadband; the only question will be which ISP you use.

I'm in an area due to be cabinetised in 2010 but I have a sync speed of 9 Mbps on the Orcon network.  Kinda makes you wonder why we're getting a cabinet.

Because it's Telecoms great last laugh we'll abbandon the exchanges and use smaller and closer cabinets and be able to offer much better speeds than someone who would have to go all the way to an exchange

in my case im 4 ~ 4.5km away from my exchange probaly be lucky to get 10mbps sync where as an cabinet say 1km away and i'll get 16+mbps do you think i'll put up with a slower speed and pay the same price as say someone a Km away from the exchange who's getting 16mbps or more pfff not very likely as it is im pissed i cant evan get a 3.2mbps sync which i should be able to get quite happily

I remember posting about this before, but it is a good question.

Currently we can keep you on the Orcon+ network, however you are likely to have your sync speed impacted when the Telecom cabinet is fired up.

We are currently doing a lot of work in the background on alternatives, in particular the sub loop extension service (SLES), and sub loop unbundling (where we put our own gear in the roadside cabinets), which will likely mean that in future we can continue to provide the same great broadband and phone service that you currently get.

Will likely have more information about these things early in the new year.

Sorry for going of topic a bit. Didn't want to spam another thread out and it is kind of related.

Hello. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to have 1 stickyed threads for questions to the orcon people. (usefull productive questions). That way duncan could check it maybe once a week or whatever suits duncan:D. And duncan could list awnswers to previously awnswered qustions. This would make it into a kind of fact thread. Someone with a question could look at awnswers first and it would make it easier to ask a question. Then duncan could allso add the "usefull questions and awsnwers" to the orcon website to assist others. They could use this to see what type of questions people are asking and then add information about those types of questions to their website.

Oh and allso the thread could be about positive and negative feedback (constructive feedback) and sugestions. Although I fear that this would not be possible as their would be to much unconstructive feedback.

Anyways I have a question for duncan to if you do not mind :D.

Duncan I am in the orcon+ network zone. And on your website you have an area where you can enter either your phone number or your adress to find out just what services orcon can provide to you at a given location. However when I enter my phone number it says "We are currently unable to deliver the unbundled broadband and phone from the Orcon+ Network to your home, however we hope to be able to in the future.". But I am inside the orcon+ network. So why can I not have orcon+ internet?

Also I would like to point out that I find it disapointing that it does not say why when I enter my phone number into the find services box. It is the first thing I think about when It says I can not have orcon+ and I presume it might not just be me who would like to know why. I like it how their is a feature to find out when it will be available though. Allso your new website looks nice and is easy to use. Also being that I am inside the Orcon+ zone but can not have orcon+ features it makes me want to know even more.

Oh and some more feedback on the website :D. When I am viewing the plans available for me at my house after entering the phone number their is a picture of a guy near the top of the web page with "See all Orcon At Home plans" to the right of him. Now when I am looking at the content on the page (the internet plans) I tend not to look at the stuff placed out of the center of the page. Now I find it hard to notice the link to seeing all the plans. I think it would be more effective if another link to all the plans was placed near the bottum of the page below the internet plans but still in that centrall area and near all that information. Then when they read to the bottum of the page and if they want to find out more they will see the link. They would be less likely presumably to see it near the top of the page with the stuff they have allready read.

Allso at "http://www.orcon.net.nz/home/plans" their is what I belive to be misleading information regarding some of your non orcon+ plans. I am refering to the following statement "Maximum download speed that your line can support (up to 8Mbps) / 128kbps upload speed (upgradeable to max/max)" under the details section of the platinum plan. Now I belive the part where it says "is up to 8mbps" is misleading as due to technical reasons you will not synch at 8mbps with the 128kbps upload rate. And it costs more to get the faster upload rate. And I belive that alot of people would not understand enough to realise that they have no chance of getting the advertised 8mbps download speed with the 128kbps upload speed that is the default for that plan. Now some people might allso miss read or missunderstand this even if they do know the technical details. And under the fair trading act deceptive and misleading advertising is not allowed. And I belive this to fit under the category of likely to mislead people. So im just pointing it out to you because it might save you some headaches latter on and just incase you had not noticed it. Cheers and have a good day duncan :D. Oh yer and I hope you have read this :D

Yeah I'm sure Orcon will find a solution down the track. Like I said I'm not worried because I won't be on a cabinet till 2011 and I'm sure by then I'll still be on orcon+ network through a cabinet. it's good news because I really don't want to have to move back onto telecom in the future.

Ragnor: http://www.comcom.govt.nz/IndustryRegulation/Telecommunications/StandardTermsDeterminations/SubloopUCLLservice/DecisionsList.aspx

Wow.  Clearly a complex issue.  I see that there's a conference on this next week run by the Commerce Commission.  Hopefully it will all be sorted by the time we're cabinetised in 2010.

I guess my only comment would be that there must be a point at which it's simply not economic for another supplier to put additional equipment in a cabinet.  For example, our local cabinet will serve (I guess) a few hundred homes.  If half have broadband, and say 10% of those use Orcon, then that's really not a very large number.
