I got a e-mail from "One" about the up coming 3G Network closure.

I have a Samsung Galaxy J8 Phone.

According to everything I have Google and looked at on the Samsung website, says my phone will work on the "One" 4G Network.

But then I got a e-mail from Telstra in Australia the other day to say that my phone wont work over in Australa.

How can I find out if my phone if my phone will work on the 4G network?

The days of just checking the frequency bands is pretty much over,

With things like VOLTE becoming a requirement for big chunks of the network, you;re likely to have to have a device that network ops can provide an update for...

I am sure it will work on the OneNZ network for 4G data but the issue will be VoLTE

4G and VoLTE are two completely different things

The phone needs to support the VoLTE profile of One NZ (regardless of if the 4G bands are supported by the phone)

no One NZ VoLTE profile then no calls/txt once 3G shuts down even tho data will work perfectly.

Isn’t One keeping their 2g network going? So for calling, it won’t be an issue until that’s switched off?

I've encountered a few devices that are in that werid grey area of "Do they work or not?" with the upcoming 3G shutoff. Even if they support 4G they might not support VoLTE and thus will be useless for voice calls, and finding out if they do can be hard/impossible with the older models.

My quick fix for this has been to snap the offending handset into two seperate pieces, thus ensuring there can be no confusion about its support for VoLTE.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Have you tried testing?
Make sure you are in OneNZ native coverage area, i.e. not near a rural RCG tower. Confirm phone shows 4G. Make a call and observe 4G icon, does it change to 3G? If it stays on 4G, or shows VoLTE, then it should be compatible. If it changes to 3G, then probably time for a new phone:(

And the frontline will be getting more calls asking why and to fix it (no way)!

Everyone does VoLTE differently. God forbid the complaints that were posted in the Google Pixels threads and many a times it was advised don't if you rely on VoLTE to make calls.

I say this that owns a Oneplus 12, has rocked a S23U, many iPhones, a OP8, a Huawei P30 and a S9 and was driven to the telco industry by this VERY specific problem. Every vendor does it differently. Every carrier does it differently. It's never going to be a perfect world. You take a big risk if your phone claims to be compatible but your carrier of choice hasn't tested it.

an app that is so basic, it just tells you what bands your phone was designed to work with and then in a simple way let you know which mobile provider it can work with

This is more than just bands. This is a spec that allows calling over data and stuff like that already exists in Android itself. *#*#4636#*#* (if your vendor allows you to run it) will tell you if voice services over LTE are available.

Its more than that, in the VoLTE profile has things like the carriers call server, Codec protocols among other things

Carriers release this information and then it is up to the phone manufacturer to put that profile into their handset so when the phone connects to that network it knows how to connect VoLTE to that carrier.
