We have moved into another house that has been completely renovated and re-wired. Issue is, the Chorus ONT box is in the downstairs garage, and inadvertently, no telephone cable was run from the chorus ONT box to the network box. So for our landline to work (landline over broadband), we have to leave the base station plugged into the ONT outlet at the ONT, and use the walk around handset elsewhere in the house. This works okay, but is a nuisance to have to take the handset down to the garage each night and plug it in for recharging. It also means, no other phones can be plugged into the data outlets elsewhere in the house.

I am trying to find if there is a piece of hardware we can connect to the ont, and receptive end plugged into the network box, thereby enabling all other data outlets in the property if need be to have a phone connection.

Pleased if anyone has any suggestions.

Can you use a phone with multi handsets and just leave the master in the garage?

If its VOIP phone it should work on any data outlet in the house? therefore you can get a lan over power adaptor to use if its only phone.

Using a splitter solves one problem, but possibly creates another in that it will limit the ONT-Network box link to 100mbs

Another possible option ( although a bit more hassle) is to change ISP to one that uses the phone port on the router rather than the ONT.

or, port the number to a VOIP provider and then just put the phone on an ATA at the network box end...

Hi, would not use a splitter as it will drop the link speed to 100Mb/s, as others have said, port you voice service to a 3rd party provider and use an ATA. Alternatively, get a DECT unit with multiple handsets, along with the base they come with a charge cradle for each of the extra handsets.

Nice replies, thank you. Yes thought of the multi handset and bases option, though the one my wife likes to use has large numbers, extra loudness etc, but think they also come with extra bases.

I would have thought there was a way to do this by wifi, but no-one seems to have any info on that. Also, the Modem is right beside the ONT, so that does not give us other options either...

Also, this phone in discussionn is not a voip phone, we have that also for the office. This is a landline over the broadband.

The phone in question is a Panasonic KX-TGM420AZ, and you can get a slave for it to add on, and leave the master in the Garage. So that would solve that, though the main base is then in the garage on a lower level and some distance from the main living artea. Only hassle is going down there to check messages I guess. If nothing else getting a sllave unit saves having to go up and down to lkeave the handset on charge at end of the day.

Still would be nicer to link the ONT to the Network box (about 10m away) though with wifi hardware if anyone has any ideas?

Hi there are wireless phone line extenders, but I have never seen them here, they were common in the US a few years back, but essentially they used dect to do the trick.

Personally, and I know our needs and expectations are all different, but we abandoned a land line years ago, as the only folk who rang it were telemarketers or the MIL neither I desired to speak to.

Mobile is so much easier and with unlimited minutes for such low prices, it's a no brainer.

Depending on distance and difficulty, it might be possible to haul another cat6 using the one that's already present.

Your phone is delivered through the ONT, so it is actually VoIP, it's just converted back to analogue using a built-in ATA inside the ONT, travelling over Chorus' network.

Some ISPs use the onboard ATA in the ONT, while others use the ATA inside the router they supply. Changing ISP to one that uses the router to deliver voice removes the issue.

I Just reallised, I have a cat6 cable running from the modem (which is plugged into the ONT) to the network box. Onn that basis, I guess I should be able to plug that cat6 cable directly into the ONT, and that would get the connection from ONT to the network box. That basis, can I then shift the modem to anotheer data outlet area upstairs in the house? I also have 2 wifi extenders wired from the network box, one upstaiirs and one downstairs.

I also have two other Saprk modems spare - 1 x Model HG659b Huawei unit (same as the one by the ONT box) and 1 x "Smart Modem 2 " Model 125415 - not sure who the manufacturer is for that one. So I could plug one of them iif need be into an upstairs data outlet and the phone into that?

Hi, can you please just clarify, who your ISP is? to date we have assumed its Spark.

The logical layout if there is just the ONT and a single feed to the network box in the garage is to move the main router (the ONT is technically the modem, this is followed by the router and downstream of that can be switches and further wireless APs) to the network cabinet and distribute from there.

If you ISP uses the ATA on the ONT for voice service then you still will have the same issue as before. If however your ISPs does not use the ONT but rather the router for the ATA then you can patch the phone circuit from the ATA of the router in the network box to any outlet that suits.

No, as the routers don't provide the voice service (and Spark don't provision routers to provide voice service).

Please also post photos. It is hard to follow what you're trying to say.

Post a photo of your network cabinet in the garage + your jack points in the house. It is entirely possible you won't need extra hardware at all...
