You won't have the ability to unscramble the NDS encryption.

As far as I'm aware they're using Irdeto rather than NDS... but the last time I checked was several months ago. I think the problem is more likely to be that there may be no smartcards.

Ahh good to have that question sorted. When Igloo was announced there was no mention of the encryption, but the assumption that since News Corp have a stake in NDS (an use it for all their networks) that NDS would be used. The only issue was that DNS didn't have a software based encryption scheme, and there was talk about embedded cards in the STB's.

As far as I know, News Corp does not even run Sky. It just has a small stake.

Igloo is run separate from Sky as well.

A 44% stake is not too small..

I see that this USB DVB-T2 tuner has integrated CI support.

http://www.buydvb.net/tbs5880-usb-dvbt2tc-ci-tv-box_p69.html

Would it not be a matter of buying this and then inserting this module with your Igloo card?

http://www.buydvb.net/smit-irdeto-cam-ci-module_p30.html

I am sure there will be a PCIe version of this somewhere on the net.

When I perform a blind scan on my DVB-T card I see that there are now around 12 channels, some of which are encrypted so I assume that these are for Igloo.

blur: ...with your Igloo card?

This part is the problem - my understanding is there won't be cards.

Got you - here is a Q&A on the system:

http://irdeto.com/documents/HL_CAS_IUCGen_EN_L.pdf

This is going to be a problem as it is really only useful to me if I'm able to run it through my HTPC (MediaPortal).

Yep, "a problem" would be an understatement! Wink
This technology seems related to CI+ which is starting to be deployed over in Europe and the VAST network over the ditch. The STB/CAM and subscription are inextricably linked, which really puts a damper on any non-sanctioned ways to make use of the subscription. Note that there are CI+ CAMs, but as far as I'm aware there is no PC tuner CI slot that can handle those CAMs. In our case the problem is even worse because we won't have a smartcard in the first place. The only way to get the content into an HTPC ecosystem would be through a blaster setup. I would guess that the remote control interface has been engineered to make controlling the box with anything other than the default remote difficult, and that HD outputs would be locked down with HDCP.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'll be boycotting. Igloo's value proposition is tempting to me, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to accept those restrictions.

You could probably still get igloo video into your HTPC, but it would be clunky.

As mm1352000 notes, the HD outputs will be HDCP locked, and I suspect that the SD outputs will be macrovisioned as well. Firstly, you will need a blaster setup to control channels. If you can live with SD video you will need an AV capture device connected to your HTPC, and also (probably) something in the middle to deal to macrovision. If you want HD video it gets harder still - you need specialised hardware to strip the HDCP, and also hardware that can capture HD video connected to your HTPC. With either option you would also have to schedule manually rather than via an EPG.

All this is possible (I have contemplated it for a while, but haven't tried yet) but costs money, isn't terribly elegant, costs money (quite a bit if you go the HD route), and adds complexity. Really depends how much you care about it, whether you have the budget, and whether you can live with a setup that fiddly.

Curious: why would this be?
In an "optimal" blaster setup (if there is such a thing) I would have thought that it would be eminently possible to hide the STB and use PC software for scheduling. Since Sky also provides these channels, you can just piggy back off a Sky EPG source. Alternatively, it might be possible to set up the blaster in such a way that it can blast the EPG button and you get to view the guide that way...

Card sharing has pretty much meant that software based CAMs are the way of the future.

Sad but true. You'd honestly have to wonder how the economics would stak if they didn't invest so heavily in this sort of technology and used something a little cheaper.

Spotify for example has ended the need for downloading music. At $12 / month why would I bother? And with it intergrating into MediaPortal it's a nice fit.

I wonder if there are any movie / series services similar?

Yes, but how do you get the EPG data *in* to the PC in the first place? Don't you need the Igloo card in order to get the Igloo EPG?
