Sky Television has banned a series of advertisements for Slingshot's internet service.

Sky TV spokeswoman Kirsty Way confirmed the advertisements had been rejected because of their references to Global Mode.

"We are a business that pays people who create television so we are against any form of piracy or the undermining of intellectual property rights," she said.

Sky TV is refusing to run Slingshot’s latest TV ads, in a move the ISP says is unjustified and petty.

Slingshot’s latest TV ads briefly feature the ISP’s Global Mode service, which makes it easy for users to access Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming video services.

Slingshot GM Taryn Hamilton says SKY imposed the ban late on Friday, and the move smacks of protectionism and censorship.

“It’s a sad day when our TV stations start to ban ads because they feel threatened by one of their advertisers and the products they are offering. In this case SKY is using its position to obstruct Slingshot because they feel intimidated by Global Mode.

“And the thing is, Global Mode only exists because Kiwis want access to quality streaming video at a good price. When and if local companies manage to finally crack that, then there will be no need for the service. But, until that time, people will use services like Global Mode so that they can see decent TV without having to get a second mortgage.”

I wonder what the commerce commission thinks of this?

I suspect there is the bones of a case that they are abusing a dominant market position (in TV) to stifle competition (by explicitly banning adverts for a LEGAL service that competes with them).

Personally, I'm getting a bit tired of Sky's thinly veiled insinuations that parallel importing is semi-legal, immoral and somehow analogous to piracy and theft. It's none of these things. I'm kind of surprised no journalist, like the author of this stuff article, has yet tried to call them on it. But I suppose that would require thought beyond cutting and pasting from media statements to "write" an article. It kind of shows just how parlous the state of the media now is in NZ.

All the more reason why I refuse to pay for Sky NZ, and instead have a Sky UK package instead.

I refuse to pay a cent to those corperate idiots, and that's why.

Sky suck, and are pretty much evil, but there is no real competition for them, not even Hulu/Netflix etc.

Services like that are fine for us geeks, but they are just not suitable as a replacement for cable tv/sky for everyone yet. Some people don't always want to watch a series as such, they just want a constant stream of <insert topic here>. Be that music videos, kids programs, crime channel, food channel, arts channel etc. You also can't "channel surf" hulu, netflix etc, until you find a random program you like, and for many people that IS consuming TV.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. I agree. Sport is especially big. I'm basically paying Sky $90 for a $20 sports package. I barely watch anything other than sport. I'm also looking at having to fork out another $150 or so for premier league pass so I can watch that this year.

Sommet Sports are trying, but until they get all football/rugby/cricket etc there really isn't an option.

(bear in mind that Sky's ads are only on the Sky channels - Sports, Discovery, The Box etc - not the FTA channels that happen to also be on Sky - TVNZ, TV3 etc)

TVNZ and Mediaworks would be hugely dominant when it comes to TV advertising, not Sky.

Sky's mention of piracy is pretty underhanded.
I agree with them that global mode is undermining of intellectual property rights (i.e. Netflix does not have the right to sell in NZ) however their mention of piracy in the same breath is clearly an attempt to confuse the public into thinking that Netflix is piracy, when it definitely isn't

SO happy I am getting rid of Sky. Come september I only have Freeview and (what I mostly use) my AppleTV and Fire TV with Netflix, Hulu+ etc.

Dropped Sky along time ago. went from $50 odd a month to $15 a month. Can now choose what I want to watch and when I want to watch it and what device I want to watch it on.

I also dislike Sky having the rights to the commonwealth games, which seemed wrong to me. Never fear BBC one/two to the rescue.

Ugly move Sky. Not a good look IMO.
Pulling out the Piracy line is also a bit weak.
