Great news for sport fans. SKY has today announced cheaper prices for our sports streaming app Fan Pass, in the first of a number of exciting changes to the app.

Fan Pass is SKY’s standalone live sport streaming service that gives New Zealanders access to SKY Sport channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 – anytime, anywhere, and on all leading devices.

Sport fans will be able to access Fan Pass for $59 a month, and they can drop that down to $39 a month by signing up for six months. That’s under $40 a month for Super Rugby, the Warriors, the ANZ Netball Premiership, to name a few, and of course from July it includes the All Blacks tests as they gear up for the RWC. Oh, and did we mention the Cricket World Cup starting in May, the Netball World Cup starting in July, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup?

Sport on the app can be cast to a big screen, making it a superb experience for fans who just want sport and nothing else.

“SKY has been broadcasting sport to New Zealanders for nearly 30 years, and in that time we’ve helped grow the sports that Kiwis love and built up a sport offering and production expertise that is world class” says SKY Chief Executive Martin Stewart.

“We’re committed to delivering great sport to New Zealanders in ways that work for them. We’re listening to what our customers want, and today’s changes to Fan Pass pricing reflect that. There’s more to come, and we hope Fan Pass makes great sport accessible to even more Kiwi fans this year.”

The new pricing is available from Thursday 18 April on the Fan Pass website - www.fanpass.co.nz. Current Fan Pass customers don’t need to do anything – the price drop will automatically take effect on your next bill.

True, but now anyone on any ISP can get it for a more realistic price.
With the more to come, maybe they add improvements to FanPass like OD replays. From other threads looks like just high lights at moment for on demand.

Yep, its essentially live only, get up at 3am to watch sport. Unless its on Popup in which case you wont get it. It's still a very lite option, no matter what the price is. Years ago I felt they might go all out to a pure sports app, and not cheap. Maybe they will do a Kayo and give a full sports app, Sky Sports only, not Basic. That wont be $39. But you might get Fanpass for $39 and pay more for more Sports features such as OD replays and Popups? They may drop the price of the Basics or go back to one Basic, at a Netflix price point. Might be if you have Basic and get Sport, a discount. Have Sport get Basic, a discount. Ultimately it will be cheaper than now and gets the punters back. Problem is it gets the punters back but they then lose revenue on the current subscribers. BUT if all this takes them to 900,000 then the flailing ARPU is much less relevant

More will come as Fanpass being cheaper doesn't solve the core problem.

Why should population size affect price? Does UK pay 1/10 per person than us? Does Monaco pay 100x as much?

The sooner the model moves away from regional and to a realistic per person price, the better

Sky subscribers are not eligible. I still get emails though, for some reason.

Ive watched a good bit of golf on SkyGo lately, it works great these days, and it has 26 channels, and all popups, I'd use that. Not sure what its like on a big screen, Fanpass would win that battle.

Doesn't make sense. There's no scale involved. We don't pay more for Netflix or Spotify (as far as I'm aware - I actually pay my Netflix subs in UK and I think it's marginally more expensive).

So if rights you buy for sport or movies is a lower cost per head, you can charge lower cost per head to the public. Another example is buying in bulk. If your business is big, you get a better deal, you have a better economy of scale. Your larger scale (size) gets a better economical return (cheaper price)

Happens all the time in NZ. I've been to many cities that are much bigger than our whole NZ population.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise that every person who watches F1 actually has their own copy hand-crafted before being streamed over an individual connection /sarc. I understand how economy of scale works, but I don't see that it is relevant in this case. Why isn't Spotify more expensive here or cheaper in UK? Or Netflix?

There is no logical reason whatever why f1 rights, or any rights should cost more per head for a 4M population country than a 60M country. This just seems an artificial argument for why Kayo sports etc is cheaper than Sky or Sport.

My personal view is that the cross-subsidising of Sky Sport from Sky basic, and the monopoly position that Sky enjoyed as a PPV provider, are what have driven our costs up. We now see that this model doesn't work when competition kicks in, shown by the sudden drop in fanpass costs and the splitting of the various Sky packages.
