Bit of an odd one -

A friend has Sky broadband here in Wellington and in Hanmer (SI).

Her laptop can connect via wifi to a number of sources, but NOT their Sky networks.

I've tested the laptop myself and could wifi connect using 2 or 3 different wifi networks, but the owner insists that it won't on their 2 Sky networks.

In fact she says that the Sky wifi SSID doesn't even show in the available wifi sources lists.  Note that another of their PC and tablet both connect to their Sky wifi network no problem at all.

I've run through all the usual network and wifi adapter resets, and waiting to hear if it works.

Any Sky subscribers experienced this?  Any suggestions welcome.

Tks.

Is this via The Sky supplied router/modem...

Does it happen on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands....

What channels is the router set to use??

This can happen if the WiFi is using a channel that is not legal in NZ, if the router is set to the wrong country code.  Some devices when set to NZ will not see the bad channel when connecting, and others will still see it and illegally use it.

I’d try deleting the wifi credentials for the sky wifi from the laptop and re add it.

If still no dice, then reset the sky wifi to defaults and re configure…..  it might be the laptop isn’t recognising the security settings on the wifi router e.g. WPA vs WPA2, AES/TPK etc etc (meaning the router might be pumping out a security setting which is newer than the laptop can handle).

make sense?

Sorry, your post is actually a bit messy to understand.

So they have a router from Sky broadband with wifi on it, all devices are happy with it except the one laptop, which is happy to work with other wifi connections.

Is that laptop a corporate device ? If so, could have something thats preventing the connection - but would be odd that it allows other connections.

Check the router and ensure its not limited on DHCP or for some reason its blocking the laptops MAC address.

What brand is the router anyway ?

I've also encountered the other way around once or twice, where a device purchased overseas cannot connect to specific NZ legal frequencies.

How new/old is this particular laptop?

When I first set up with Sky Broadband, one of the laptops around the house needed a driver update to connect to the wifi.

Latest SkyBB Kaon does WPA3 out of the box with WPA2 disabled

This means a lot of older devices (pre 2021) will not connect, they won't even see the SSID broadcasting

Good news is that WPA2/WPA3 can run in mixed mode meaning the client will choose the best it supports

However, I don't know if the SkyBB router allows you to select WPA2 or WPA3

Thread title is very confusing! Wi-Fi is not ISP related

It may be worth trying WPA2 only if mixed doesn't work either. My MIL's recent One NZ supplied router would not work with one of their smart TVs unless the router config was switched from mixed WPA3/WPA2 to WPA2-only. Seems to be some dodgy Wifi chips that can't fall back onto WPA2 even when it is provided as an option (probably only checks the 1st auth option and fails if it is not WPA2).

Answers:

Yes.

Don't know, I haven't visited the home.

     >can happen if the WiFi is using a channel that is not legal in NZ, if the router is set to the wrong country code<

Unlikely since it is SkyNZ supplied, and other devices use the network no problem.

Correct.

No.

Old-ish, but why just Sky?  I'll try and test the laptop on mu network using latest Deco as a comparison.

Excellent suggestion, something for me to check, however their other devices are not exactly latest or recently purchased either.

I'm a Sky customer and have one of their Wifi 6 routers.   I've experienced this and it drove me nuts.   It was some time ago now but I think it was related to the IP6 setting box being ticked.  Once I removed this, back to normal.  don't know how it changed in the first place as things had been working just fine up until then.

It is not unrelated, when the ISP supplies the router - which most non-tech people would just go with.

The router Sky provided was a very capable Kaon Wifi6 Router.

But I encountered exactly this issue - a Laptop that had connected to the previous router with no issues could not even 'see' Wifi provided by the Kaon router.

Because, out of the the box the Sky Kaon router disables WPA2 (as it should, WPA2 has been cracked)

Either replace the laptop, connect via ethernet or, and not recommended reduce the WiFi security to WPA2
