Dulouz: After using both the Lightbox and Netflix services I would agree that Lightbox is on a hiding to nothing. Netflix is clearly one of the global leaders in streaming services and in an open market I find it hard to imagine how Lightbox can succeed. That said, good luck to Lightbox!

I tend to agree, Netflix came, they conquered, based on chat from sites like this it is probably safe to say the majority are content and able to make fairly full use of the service right from the get go, in our household Lightbox has struggled to get any traction other than the kids watching a bit via ipad but even then they have mostly migrated to Netflix due to wider range of relevant programming

I want to support the locals but the service needs to integrate into my life, i think that the simple addition of chromecast support and maybe an android app will sort that

I don't understand how it all works but one of the key benefits of Sky is being able to watch the free to air channels, if i could stream TV1,2,3 from lightbox I would be sold, it would be a point of difference that would make it worth subscribing for a lot of kiwis i am sure

I can't see that happening while TVNZ and TV3 have their own streaming services. Or are you talking about a real time stream of their broadcast?

Not sure if it's been announced anywhere but i've heard that Panasonic should be getting Lightbox (among a few other apps that i can't recall) at some point this year. No ETA, just coming soon. Also no idea how far back availability will go, but i'd imagine it'd be at least this years and last years models.

This would have to be one of the least useful things a streaming service could possibly do

Almost everybody in the country can already get freeview (for free!) via their set top boxes and/or TV.

The incremental benefit of being able to stream it to an ipad or other device is pretty slim.
The subset of people who CAN'T get Freeview HD but also CAN have good enough broadband to stream Freeview HD is going to be extremely small.

And freeview is still mostly reality crud, scheduled, linear programming, limited catalogue (i.e. only a few things to choose from at any one time), with heaps of ads that sort of structure is going the way of the dodo.

How can people tell Lightbox etc to 'get with times' but then also advocate for them to launch this. A product which is waaaaay further behind than what they already have (on demand, no ads, large catalogue, quality programming)

not 'no value' just very very low value.

Lightbox's current business model delivers content that
a)you otherwise cannot get,
b) in a form that is entirely on demand and
c) totally ad free.

What you are suggesting is that they should spend development time and resource to provide content that is
a) already available to almost the entire country for free
b) has shed load of ads
c) is totally shceduled and restricted in what you can watch and when.

to me, that is enormous step backwards
The incremental benefit of being able to watch ad infested content it on a mobile device is so minor compared to that

Adding true value would be integrating the terrestrial VOD services in to Lightbox so that you only have to go to one place to access the content not x number of different apps, although I could see the benefit of streaming live tv too.

The revenue will be teeny, and the expectation of all the cool shows will be high, and there will be no ad revenue. Theoretically you have never heard of Auckland Glass, JB Hifi as there will be no ads. No ads on radio is wanted and websites as well as we want a no ads life? Thats theoretically a whole sector of the economy that will disappear. How will we know what the next big TV series or movie is, as there will be no ads.

Worth pondering.

SVOD != no ads.

For example, we use Hulu+, and that has ads. And interestingly, HBO Now had ads for content on its services at the start of the S5 premiere of Game of Thrones.

I see your point, but bear in mind Sky was doing that long before Freeview was a thing.

Having a sky box with the FTA channels was a considerably better experience than using a traditional aerial or bunny ears.

also, the nature of Sky broadcasting s that it is very similar to Freeview - old style media with linear scheduled content, lots of ads etc i , so it promotes channel flicking and there is a natural synergy.

Lightbox is fundamentally a new media business - it doesn't fit with freeview at all.

Someone else suggested integrating the catch up services that TVNZ and TV3 etc offer. That would be pretty cool and I can see benefits there, but linear content is just so 'old school'

All these apps, are seperata entities, they are competing, you can't really expect them to compete and also sleep together.

A better option is a box that plays everything, all the apps lined up in a row. You can imagine a single app, doing the consolidation, if the players were happy with that (less or no branding, etc)
And why not have streaming live TV? While its popular (as its the norm for MANY), if its there, play it. At some point in the future you can watch live or OD if all the catalogue is OD

Related, had to watch 3NOW VOD last night, as recording failed, I can mirror from Macbook to TV via Airplay, but iPad to TV via Airplay is unavailabl due to restricted content error message, and on the website it's not avaialble for that reaosn, why is that? Quality was just watchable, only just. Soft, just not smooth.
Not great at all. I will cable thwe ATV3 to my new AEBS to try , that will increase the already good as gold N wifi by a long way to the AC speed cable
