It's easy to be cynical and take the mickey but actually I kind of like this idea of being able to watch one-off sports matches without having to buy the monthly package. Sports coaches all say that kids should watch sport played at the top level so they can see how the big boys do it, but it's hard to justify subscribing to Sky just for a few big rugby and cricket games (we don't watch a lot of other stuff).

Our kids simply miss out on seeing top-level sport except going to the occasional 5pm home Phoenix game. One-off games on Igloo without the package would be great, and it wouldn't even matter not being able to record because you're going to watch it live anyway.

KiwiNZ: After my recent failed experiment with T-Box and following the TVNZ woeful attempt at TiVo I will not be participating in this.

Can you elaborate on your experience with the T-Box? I assume that this was in Australia?

No it was new Zealand with TelstraClear's T-Box. To cut a long story short or cut a long story long I recommend you read this thread http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=44&topicid=80730

This ^^^.

TiVo could have done it. TVNZ started with TiVo but they had no motivation for that and didn't want to face Sky competition. Basically a waste of money, time for everyone involved: TVNZ, TiVo and mainly the consumer.

The idea is good. No respect for consumer still...

If it's not a pvr then I guess there'll be no hd recordings as hdcp will stop it outputting to anything but a tv in hd.

Movies and tv programs look same price as tivo, which failed on that. Some cases around $2.50 an epIsode can buy box set for. Though looks like they'll have bigger range then tivo.

Pretty sure once people a look at the 11 channels will tire of all the self promotions, add breaks during programs they're paying for. I only pay because of add on channels, movies and soho which aren't available on this set up as fixed monthly cost.

The big thing has over tivo is pay per view sports, the people that want this it's ideal for as long as it's set at a price that people prepared to pay to view.

how could TiVo have done one-off sports matches? Sky hold the rights to all the good stuff.

For all its shortcomings, the T-Box is way better value for money. For $15 a month, you get Freeview, full HD and a PVR. Why would I drop picture quality, give up the ability to record programs, and then stump up an extra $10 a month to boot! Oh, that's right, I get 11 extra crappy channels thrown in. No thanks.

Yeah, Sky has the rights now. But those rights come up for renewal. Tivo could have given TVNZ a way to make money of sports events outside of advertising, as PPV events over the internet.

Thing is I guess the ability to do PPV sports over the internet means there could be more than Sky, paid TV in various formats, and TVNZ free to air bidding.

Could mean the rights become more valuable as others could have the chance to distribute over the internet and make money doing it? Without needing a traditional broadcast infrastructure.

sky can afford to bid for sports rights based on around 500k households paying $75 each per month for sky basic + sports.

How much do you think TVNZ could afford to bid, even if they managed to magically get 200,000 tiVos out there?

We've had a T-Box for just on 6 months. Yes it requires the odd re-boot, and on occasions you might miss a recording, but, in general , it suffices ... and still represents better value than the $25 sky offering. The only possible pro for igloo is the option to pay to view for sport, but, really, all in all, it's a pretty uninspiring offer.

After following the thread I posted, I wouldn't touch the thing or suggest it.

I think the igloo is an interesting proposal and it does represent value to me.

It's very interesting and timely.  I know people who have just dumped digital TV but are looking at something for next winters sports.  This is a very attractive option.

I agree it doesn't do PVR.  but again, what's the point if you constantly have to reboot the thing.

The thing about occasionally missing a recording is that it would be the one that the wife wanted and then I get yelled at.

SO how do I get the TYbox for $15 per month? I dont want to switch to telstraclear as my ISP. I am quiet happy with snap. It does not seem possible to get the ebox without a broadband and phone connection.

You are right, I think you need to use Telstra as ISP, so not for everyone.

We are on the free Tbox offer for 2 years, so even better value when stacked up against sky. On average we need to re-boot the box about once every two weeks - it takes no longer than an average PC boot, so no great shakes. Missing occasional recordings is more annoying, but, to be honest, this would less than one in 20 or so. So, my way of thinking, 19 out of 20 recordings is still way better than 0 out of 20 recordings, which is the default igloo option (:
