$15 for something that doesn't work v's $25 for something that does?

To be fair we don't know that yet do we. :D

Yes I will support that comment as Igloo is still vapourware.

So this igloo thing is crap because even your cheapo freeview PVR's which handle freeview pretty well will be unable to record from it.

TV has moved on, I would never be able to go back to watching live TV. Having the live pause option is OK I guess, But not being able to series link something, ir even record a show is just not worth it.

We've had a T-Box for just on 6 months. Yes it requires the odd re-boot, and on occasions you might miss a recording, but, in general , it suffices ... and still represents better value than the $25 sky offering. The only possible pro for igloo is the option to pay to view for sport, but, really, all in all, it's a pretty uninspiring offer.

SO how do I get the TYbox for $15 per month? I dont want to switch to telstraclear as my ISP. I am quiet happy with snap. It does not seem possible to get the ebox without a broadband and phone connection.

TelstraClear TV's offering is only available as part of a package deal, ie you either need to have a phone or broadband with it.

dafman: We are on the free Tbox offer for 2 years, so even better value when stacked up against sky. On average we need to re-boot the box about once every two weeks - it takes no longer than an average PC boot, so no great shakes. Missing occasional recordings is more annoying, but, to be honest, this would less than one in 20 or so. So, my way of thinking, 19 out of 20 recordings is still way better than 0 out of 20 recordings, which is the default igloo option (:

Yes I will support that comment as Igloo is still vapourware.

I don't agree that 19/20 is better than 0/20 though.  I like stuff to either work or not work.  I find it very annoying when it 'almost' works.

The igloo remote looks identical to the TBox remote, so, who knows - if they come off the same production line the reliability issue might be a mute point.

Seriously, though, I just can't see this initiative getting critical mass to be successful. My prediction, it doesn't fly, and, will either be revamped or dropped within 24 months.

Ya I don't know.  The price point is very sharp and if people can use this to just by an event I can see it being of interest.

How much it may impact the existing product base would be interesting to know but I'm betting we'll never know that answer.

dafman: For all its shortcomings, the T-Box is way better value for money. For $15 a month, you get Freeview, full HD and a PVR. Why would I drop picture quality, give up the ability to record programs, and then stump up an extra $10 a month to boot! Oh, that's right, I get 11 extra crappy channels thrown in. No thanks.

Yes we don't know how well it will work. The price if the thing is quite high, considering you can buy a tivo for just $100 more, and that is a good PVR which you can also rent movies on (although poor selection)
Based on TVNZs handling of tivo, I don't have much hope for this device. Sky is quite good at marketing, but they dont' want to canabolise their current offering. They would hardly want to have their sky basic customers switching to a similar service (sky basic has a few more channels) that is half the price.

Excerpt from this NBR article:

MediaWorks yet to sign on
At an Igloo press conference yesterday, chief executive Chaz Savage said he had a verbal commitment from MediaWorks to provide electronic programming guide (EPG) data for TV3 and Four.

Sky TV subsequently told NBR that if MediaWorks does not ink a deal in time for Igloo’s launch, the new set-top box will have basic “what’s now and what’s next” listings for TV3 and Four.

Given how Sky behaved towards Tivo, I would find it absolutely delicious if someone gave Sky a taste of their own medicine by withholding their EPG from Igloo.

TVNZ needs to be sold before it is too late and it's value dropped to low.

Appealing you can get the sport, without paying a monthly fee. Just what is it??????

I don't feel it will impact Skys product base at all. Otherwise Sky would not get into this venture. In my opinion, they will just gather low revenue customers. Thats not a bad thing as they will end up with more market share as they will have the 50% odd of the market they now have who pay, and more customers who are currently free TV viewers, who will pay for a low cost pay TV. I imagine this has been viability tested so that it exceeds those who may downgrade. Once the "lite" customers are in board with Sky, some will eventually pay more to get more, but they are a new revenue stream.

On the topic of content, I feel some of us are a little unrealistic. Some like sport some dont, you cannot satisfy everyone.  If 100 of us listed out our ideal line up, there will probably be 60 versions.

Finally, someone has said it!

After 11 pages on this topic, and everybody outlining what they think Sky and TVNZ SHOULD have chosen as an ideal line-up, someone has stated the obvious.

I couldn't agree more with this comment, and was the reason I got more than a little bored with this thread.

Suffice to say, I too think that this concept is sound and should attract a new customer base not already adding to Sky Television's coffers.

I guess all that's left to d now is wait and see what the final offering looks like.

(oh, and for the record I don't like sports either! Smile)

so $200 upfront then $25/month after that.

that is.... almost the exact same price as TiVo was when it was launched (not the price it is now, but the price it was launched at). you get some more channels with Igloo, but TiVo was a PVR.

The main difference as to whether this stands or falls will be the ondemand content. If it is premium, recent, stuff and priced well, then it will do well. If it is rubbish like Caspa was, then it will fail.

Especially if they sate it is because Sky canot provide them with viewing statistics.

It does make you wonder why mediaworks aren't withholding the EPG to them, as it doesn't sould like the igloo uses the same over the air EPG that freeview uses. But maybe their realise, unlike sky, that their viewers who can't see whats on, aren't going to bother watching the channel. I read that sky had said it was different from them wthholding it from tivo, because tivo was a PVR, while igloo wasn't.

There was a good story on mediawatch on radio NZ on Sunday about tvnz and igloo. Go to their website to listen if interested.
