I'm still not sure why they should be charging $15 a month for the recording function on top of the standard sub... When you are already paying for the box this charge on top is not good value and seems like another cash grab.. unless of course this is how they're paying for the satellite costs with Optus...

I certainly agree with this. I was one of the customers who forked out $600 for the original MySky, then another $200 (I think) for Sky+ upgrade. Forcing customers to pay for the simple act of recording is a cash grab. I'm *hoping* that the basic function will allow concurrent recording of three channels (as with Sky+). Frankly this is enough, most of the time; five channels might be worth it during times when something like the Olympics is on.

In the end, they wont get much from me, as if the only option is the $15/month for recording, I'll drop at least one Sky Channel to subsidize their treachery!!.

I'm also a bit worried about the fact that, with regard to recording 5 channels, its says "starting at". Does that mean it escalates?

Steve

PolicyGuy:

If it was extractable and installable, I wouldn't expect it to work as a Sky programme material receiver.

I would expect that the Sky programme streams are encrypted and that decryption requires a key linked in some way to the hardware.
Well, that's what I would do if I was Sky

Based on the screenshot above, if it is using Sky Go as a backend, then it's likely using Widevine encryption for the streams (as that is what Sky Go uses), which is standard in all certified Android TV boxes. So I don't think that would be a barrier.

I think regardless, it might not work on a third party device as it may require some system level permissions, but that's just pure speculation on my part.

I wonder if the New $65 dongle uses the Sky Live TV App available on Google TV? Anybody got a Sky Account and Google TV to try it? That may be just an app for Meetings though.

Sky releases their full year financial results this Thursday (August 25).

I reckon there's a good chance we'll see more details about the new offerings at the same time, as companies generally like to present news like this alongside their results.

I wonder if it would be possible to transfer content we have stored on the current Sky Box to the new Sky Box. We have quite a lot of content we recorded but just never got around to watching it yet. Would hate to be forced to "rapid watch" all of it if we decide to get the new Sky Box :)

I'd suggest that would be exceedingly unlikely.

Would paying the $200 give you ownership of the box or have to hand it back when cancelling?

I could be wrong, but at one stage I *think* I saw a long time ago that there was going to be the option of retaining the existing box to complete watching content, while having a new box too.

Part of me doubts it; you’d have to have a satellite connection to the new and old box as I think MySky won’t operate without one. I’ve also found in the past that when updating from MySky to Sky+, the option to retain the old box was only available if you wanted fork out for Multiroom.

Presumably they don't rate the average Joe's internet connection to reliably deliver 5x streams without flooding their support centre with angry calls due to buffering or drop outs.

One foot in the current, one foot still firmly placed in the past.

Having their own Broadband ISP you'd think they'd do something innovative to ensure their Broadband subs could go dish less in the first instance, and then install a dish as a last resort.

You won't be able to.

Did some snooping on the site and found some data:

"boxUpgradeRecordingLossMessage": "Your New Sky box will not have your old recordings. You’ll need to make sure you have watched all your recordings in your planner before you activate your New Sky Box. You'll also need to set up any series links to your New Box.",

"internetRequirementMessage": "You'll need an internet connection to use your New Sky box, data usage will apply. For the best entertainment experience we recommend XXMbps",

"paymentOptionsCopy": "There's payment options to suit you. Choose from a one-off payment for the use of your New Sky Box or a $10 per month recurring fee.",

As one who has had multiroom for some time, a number of questions come to mind.

1. If I purchase the new box, will one of the decoders have to be returned or will I be able to have the new one running alongside one or the other, or alternatively in a third room (wifi only in all cases)?
2. If not, what time limit will be given before one of the two decoders will be cut off and must be returned?
3. If more than two devices are set up, will there be an additional monthly charge over and above the present multiroom rate for operating a third box? Will each device have an operating charge over and above the normal subscription?
4. Given the portability of the new box, will Sky permit it being taken to a different location (such as a holiday home) or to someone's home to watch a specific programme. How would they police such prohibition should they wish to prevent this happening?
5. At present one is able to Set up recording from the web TV guide and specify which decoder this should occur. Will this still be possible if the household has a mix of old and new boxes?

Whether Sky has given much thought to this, who knows, but it would be good to get some details in order to make some cost efficient planning.

That will be an interesting thing to see if they do anything on the new hardware to make sure that its still at the same property. Currently I know of many people who have 4 myskys on multiroom but they most are at their kids houses. With a wifi radio in them it would be very easy to get a location that it should be at and cause problems for people that take them off site.

Many Mobile Homes have Sky dishes and operate with impunity at the moment. If they restrict location, that'll cause a problem. I suppose in the multi-room case, if two or more devices are operating in different locations at the same time, that could be tracked and a snotty notice sent similar to those swapping smartcards between decoders.  As far as the portability thing goes, taking the box to different locations is no different than casting "SkyGo" from your phone wherever you go. The size and portability was supposedly the attractiveness of this new box, not being restricted to hard wiring. There will always be people that will cheat the system!

Few if any represent lost revenue, so the tight cheats don't probably matter in that scheme of things

I currently have 2 MySkys, one that records and another that doesnt.

We regularly take the recording one to a holiday home, an address that we had to register with Sky many moons ago.

The holiday home has no internet so the satellite function is essential there.

Ultimately I would like the new box as our main home Sky device, the existing nonrecording one to be the secondary home device, and the existing recording one to be permanently at the holiday home (one less thing to cart backwards and forwards).

I can't recall seeing anywhere that says if the new box can connect to two TV's or if you still need two boxes. But I haven't been looking particularly hard either. If I have seen it, I don't remember. Sign of the times.
