As one who has had multiroom for some time, a number of questions come to mind.

1. If I purchase the new box, will one of the decoders have to be returned or will I be able to have the new one running alongside one or the other, or alternatively in a third room (wifi only in all cases)?

A: You can keep the other if you pay another multiroom based on what I did with VTV.

2. If not, what time limit will be given before one of the two decoders will be cut off and must be returned ?

A: Probably at the most a week.

3. If more than two devices are set up, will there be an additional monthly charge over and above the present multiroom rate for operating a third box? Will each device have an operating charge over and above the normal subscription ?

A: Yes, this is an additional multiroom only apparently.

4. Given the portability of the new box, will Sky permit it being taken to a different location (such as a holiday home) or to someone's home to watch a specific programme. How would they police such prohibition should they wish to prevent this happening ?

A: Unsure if this will be allowed.

5. At present one is able to Set up recording from the web TV guide and specify which decoder this should occur. Will this still be possible if the household has a mix of old and new boxes ?

A :Should still be the case.

Whether Sky has given much thought to this, who knows, but it would be good to get some details in order to make some cost efficient planning.

Tony C.

I guess my question is, Vodafone TV had a standalone option where you could buy the box from the likes of Noel Leeming and Sky was optional to add (you could subscribe, cancel, and resubscribe when you like)

Wonder if this would this be possible with the new box? For the box to be usable to watch Freeview and use apps while you're not currently subscribed. (this co or uld be the decider between getting one of these and another device like SmartVu or Chromecast with Google TV

The difference is that the Sky Stream rebranded Chromecast with Google TV will work, but not do recording.

The New Sky Box will require satellite for the TV channels, and do streaming and on demand over the internet.

I think you would not be able to record on it if you did not have Sky setup, however you would be able to use streaming and on demand.
I'm picking that the initial offer would be for either pay upfront $200, or $10 a month.

Then next year only do a pay $10 a month and call it the "Sky 4K upgrade" or whatever they call it.

It is my understanding that if you pay $200 for the box then you still have to pay from $15 per month for recording. I assume this is the minimum for Freeview channels, and then you have to pay on top of this to receive Sky channels. Can anyone elucidate please?

Hi Ivan, this appears to be correct, as it is effectively the same conditions for Vodafone TV;
with the exception that the Vodafone TV included recording for free .

No way will the box be provided to people without a Sky subscription as Sky could not sustain the free dish install in such situations - and that is the only way they will support reception of live channels.

I would have to agree.

Vodafone couldn't make a standalone box pay, so I doubt whether Sky could either. It will be used solely as a way to drive monthly subscriptions.

Sky lost another 27k box subscribers in the last year so by the time they get 4K online in 2025 they could be another 75k box subscribers down.

Just read the financial update on Sky's performance.

They confirmed they will "own the new box"

Someone will have to turn the lights out on the way out. Sky still are living in the 1990's

App based delivery of their content is the future, however Sky still seem to obsess over another box which will just be binned in a few years..

There is no way i would get a dish on my roof again!

TheMightyKiwipeso:... The New Sky Box will require satellite for the TV channels, and do streaming and on demand over the internet.

I think you would not be able to record on it if you did not have Sky setup, however you would be able to use streaming and on demand....

So, the new sky box is useless without a dish.

I want series recording of any TV channel (*) programme. don't care is recording is local on my machinery or centrally on their's

By TV Channels, I mean, any channel from

  • Sky channels

    • Sky Entertainment
    • Sky Sport
    • Sky Starter

Recording not needed for any of the following, but desired:

  • Sky Sport Now - same as Sky Sport?
  • Sky Go - same as Sky channels?
  • Spark Sport
  • Neon
  • Prime Video
  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • TV+
  • ThreeNow
  • Apple TV+ (don't currently subscribe but added for completeness)
  • Disney+ (don't currently subscribe but added for completeness)

Should I investigate the Smartvu+ A7070 device or is there something better out there?

I'm quite sad that Sky seem to have missed a huge opportunity here.

I'd also be interested to hear if there are any other solutions. Maybe an aerial and a Betamax video recorder? 😜

I suspect I might just be spending more time walking the dog in the future. Perhaps that's a good thing, and it will save me quite a bit of money.
