Even an HD DVD format would be a huge step up from the current SD content.

I wonder if they will drop the HD ticket now?

It is a shame you have to buy the new box for $200 only not to own it. Plus the limitations of it having a dish.

It does seem all sky has done is "replaced" the aging mysky with an android interface and smaller design.

Vodafone TV is light years ahead.

Yes, they upgraded all their DVB-S transponders to DVB-S2 (except the one that does their Freeview channels without encryption).  The extra bandwidth was used to make a large number of their channels "HD" (they are not actually 1920x1080, rather they are 1440x1080 with an aspect ratio override that makes them 16:9).  At the same time, they removed all the SD versions of the channels that were being broadcast in HD for people paying for the HD ticket and made the existing HD versions available to everyone paying for those channels.  If I recall correctly, that happened in about September 2020.

I have my MythTV system set up to use my Sky card to record, so I can record from any Sky channel I am paying for.  I have five DVB-S2 tuners allocated for this, so I can (and occasionally do) record from five multiplexes at once.

Everything seems to have gone very quiet on the new box - nothing from Sky for ages, this thread has tapered off .....

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Maybe folks are simply giving up on Sky and the realisation that the 'new old" box will just be a tweak of what is available now. The "new old" box wont change Sky's ever revolving repeat programming.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yeah, this "new" box definitely is not living up to the hype; seems pretty much more of the same (e.g. as an option, why not allow "on demand" instead of recording ?)

Seriously (re)considering ditching Sky altogether. It's a big chuck of change (over $100) to pay out each month and all we really use it for is sport; everything else we either stream for free (tvnz) or pay a small monthly fee (netflix, prime, etc). If I can just find a good sport alternative (mainly for rugby, cricket and F1), I would have ditched it a long time ago.

As a Sport Alternative have you considered Sky Sport Now on Google TV?

I'll chime in here. I've got an Sony Bravia with Android TV built in, now running the same interface as the latest chromecasts and nVidia Shields.  For me, Sky Sports Now is working fine for sports.  Quality has improved, performance has improved and some of the earlier issues plauging the system have improved.  Is it on par with Spark Sport, nope not yet but that is mainly the UI which is really poor... if you can get around the interface issues and the $40 per month (less if you buy a  year up front) then it is fine for use in my opinion... but then my setup is fully supported by Sky.

Thanks for that. It’s good that the Sky Pod can go back 72 hours (like Vodafone TV), so that’s a bit better than I was expecting.

No recording capability (as expected) is still a bit of a downer, plus there’s also no mention of being able to view Freeview channels (but I presume you can?)

Having being used to Ondemand for say f1 over the past year. Coming back to sky with no on demand is such a backwards step. Rather than just watching Indy car race or qualifying, you have to wait for them To broadcast it again and remember to watch it or record it.

Having moved away from it, it feels so primitive to have to record something.

This quite promising but the relationship between the new box and having My Sky is still a bit confusing. It says "Recording (with My Sky)???

I've also found that if you click on the link where it offers to allow you to register interest, it doesn't seem to take you anywhere useful!

With this new Sky box, it would be really great if we could fully manage our planner from the web. Right now, all we are able to do is instruct the box to record something; however you have no idea if it is clashing with another recording or what. Considering the Sky box has been connected to the internet for a while now, surely this should be a feature ?
