Buckchoi:

There is a new page on Sky's website: Compare the features of Sky's new Sky Box and Sky Pod - Sky

Interesting but this raises more questions than it answers. Unless I missed something regarding the Sky Pod:

- do you rent it or buy it?

- how much does it cost?

- when will it be available?

- is a Sky subscription required to receive FTA channels?

- can it 'restart' FTA channels?

- says no satellite dish required but does it work via WiFi? There's an Ethernet port showing in the photo.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I think the pod is just a rebranded Chromecast Gen 4 running Google TV with a custom remote.  Its a one off purchase price and price for the service will be what ever Sky is currently at (or maybe cheaper).

I can't confirm this, but I very much doubt SKY will allow you to stream FTA channels without an active SKY subscription. Vodafone couldn't make that business model work, I doubt SKY will be able to.

No, its a unique one made by Kaonmedia, I guess a variant of the one linked below, note how in the Sky promo it sports an ethernet port, Chromecasts only have that via USB.

There is a FAQ section at the bottom of the page (which was a little hard to find initially) - this answers some of these questions as well as other info; e.g.

* pod intended as a replacement for VTV

* Android / google tech stack and can double as a chromecast

* pre-loaded with streaming apps, but more can be downloaded through google app store

* indication of costs; one-off plus subscription (no $ value though)

* Live TV and on-demand, e.g. TVNZ+), including restart (possibly pause/resume?)

Thanks for posting the link. Curious as to whether the Pod is essentially streaming the channels over internet like VTV or is it just using the Sky Go app?

It might be good enough VTV replacement for us if it's significantly cheaper than the box as mostly we use the 3 day catchup on VTV without bothering to record, and for anything we wanted to watch but hadn't within that time just used the appropriate on demand app.

Wonder if you can extract the Sky Go app or if they'll make it available generally... would be good if it could be installed on Sony TVs etc. that use Android / Google TV.

Google cached version of the Sky comparision page: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:wkjxAzMI4bcJ:https://www.sky.co.nz/test-products&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=nz&client=firefox-b-d

Interesting things I noticed:

9.    Can I use Sky Go with Sky Pod?

Yes, as long as you subscribe to at least Sky Starter. And with Sky Go you can watch up to two screens at once in addition to streaming through the Sky Pod.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting, but that seems like to me you'd be able to use the Sky Pod without any of the typical Sky subscriptions. Could be similar to the thing that Sky does (or at least used to) offer where you could have a FTA only mode for a normal Sky box.

Sky Pod comes with Netflix, TVNZ+, Three Now, Disney+, Neon, and Amazon Prime preloaded.  You can download other streaming apps from the Google Play Store.

Since you can download from the Play Store, it looks like Spark Sport could be supported (contingent on Spark enabling support for the device on their end).

Also the fact they say you can watch Live TV on both boxes seems to suggest that non-Sky Go channels will be available as well.

Sky are prioritizing existing customers. No mention of VTV customers.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I wont be gifting them $200 until they dramatically improve their content. Ever revolving repeats just does not cut .

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
