Are they sending you a courier bag for the smart card?

Any steam rollers, or forklifts at your work? Could make for an awesome video!

Plus you could send it back to them in an A4 envelope afterwards

I have moved across the ditch.  Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

hairy1: Doesn't sound quite right. Sky can't enter a property to collect their own equipment even with the property owners permission....

I think it must be because the box was used at the flatmates other address, maybe if we lived at that address they could get it?

i don't know know, doesn't make much sense at all really. It just amazes me that they a) expected me to pay to send it to them , and b) when insistent on not paying they tell me they want the smart card not the box.  I know they would get the boxes cheap (if they don't make them themselves anyway) but still... they charge customers $600 for them

IMHO, they just disclaimed any ownership interest in the box when they said they didn't want it back, which would mean you own it free and clear and can do anything from Trademe it to using it as a doorstop.

FYI it's only $600 if you don't want to pay the $15/mo hardware rental fee.  If you use their services long enough, this actually works out a good deal.

Can you believe that? Im not allowed to sell the box but they don't want it.

Did they really say they do not want it?

I'm sure the Sky bosses would not be happy with this CSR. Usually when Sky CSR's encounter an issue outside of their 'box' they will talk to a supervisor.

Actually - get it in writing from them!! Just an email would do. That covers your butt incase someone else at Sky decides you've got no claim to the equipment and wants to make trouble for you!

I can't believe all this drama

PHONE SKY again get someone who knows what they are doing. Ask for their supervisor.

They will send out a courier bag or a courier pickup or one of their local installers.

Agreed- except don't do that, he already has.  Just bin it, or send it to someone that acutally wants it.

Good idea, except if he has been given bad advice by whomever at Sky, Sky might come after him for theft or willful damage! If he can get it in writing then he has covered his ars... backside.

Sky has no claim on the OP, because he is and never was their customer and they have abandoned their equipment which he found on his premises (yes, I know someone else brought it there, but the bottom line is he has no responsibility or liability). Whoever ends up with it, if a Sky customer, should do the right thing and return it to Sky if Sky ever says they want it back.

At work we have lots of waste because what engineers want to do does not fit with normal procedure, unfortunately it is too much to customise procedures so we just have to go with wasting more until we have proven our case. Same goes for this instance.

I think there is a law (duty of care?) where you do have some level of responsibility to take care of other peoples stuff that you may end up with by accident.  At least, the responsibility not to trash the goods until the owner has had a reasonable time to collect it.

Does this fit into the category of unsolicited gifts?

If you tell them that you have it, and they don't want to come and get it, at which point does it become yours?

Just wondering...

Actually, that is true.  One thing you could do then is take it into the local police station and drop it off as lost property.  If Sky do not claim it within 30 days, then the police will give it back to you with free and clear title.

Just tell them that you found some of their equipment on your property, they come get it/send courier within 72 hours, otherwise itll be sitting out on the roadside in the rain.
