Hi All.

About 10 months ago a flatmate moved back home to the UK.
He left behind a MySky HDi box, with a smart card in it.

It wasn't until someone mentioned I try using it that I really thought about the fact it was there.

Can I use it / sell it ?

As there are non for sale on trade me, I'm assuming that Sky owns the boxes, but could be wrong.

As a student cannot really afford to pay for sky ( and I would have to get a dish etc)

What are your thoughts on what I should do with it?

Not much you can do, other than subscribe, which is at least ~ $65 per month for a mysky + basic plan.

Maybe send Sky a ransom note, see how much they will pay you to get it back :p

Sky do own the boxes. Best thing is to contact them about returning it.

There is no way they will transfer the box to anyone else even if $600 was paid up-front. The next person who wants to use it has to pay for it again. Been there, tried that when the in-laws went overseas. Best you can do with it is give it to a friend who has Sky (like me ;-) or else phone Sky and tell them to pick it up.

They'll tell you to drop it off at their offices or pay them $25 to collect it.

I hope your friend isn't coming back to NZ, they will charge him for it (unless he paid the $600 up front for it).

When that doesn't get paid, it will be off to baycorp.

Thanks for all your replies.

He left the country due to baycorp (not sure how he got through ) .

Rang sky, since there are no drop off points near me, they gave me an address to courier it to.

When I insisted I wasn't paying for it since it wasn't mine, they then said a technician could pick it up, but then promptly said the technician couldn't come as my address wasn't in the system.

There outcome was to post the smart card to them, and bin the MySky HDi box.

Can you believe that? Im not allowed to sell the box but they don't want it.

And they charge customers $600 for them?

Sky have told him they don't want it lol.

If i was in his shoes i wouldn't pay to send box to them. They either pick it up themselves or pay the courier costs to get it there.
He's done the right thing, by letting them know where the box is, and then they can decide what they want to do. Which in this case seems to be sky are prepared to go to no effort to get their box back.

No I think he need to phone Sky again and talk to someone else. So they can organize someone to collect it.

Not sure that would make a difference, the problem is where i live - they have no "Drop Off Points" .

And the technicians are not (according to sky) allowed to enter addresses that have no formal contract with Sky. (Policy apparently).

I Did try :-)

Doesn't sound quite right. Sky can't enter a property to collect their own equipment even with the property owners permission....

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I think it must be because the box was used at the flatmates other address, maybe if we lived at that address they could get it?

i don't know know, doesn't make much sense at all really. It just amazes me that they a) expected me to pay to send it to them , and b) when insistent on not paying they tell me they want the smart card not the box. I know they would get the boxes cheap (if they don't make them themselves anyway) but still... they charge customers $600 for them
