We have two landline numbers via VoIP (haven't gotten around to telling everyone what the new one is), so semi-occasionally get a call from the droids asking if I'd like a special deal from sky. I usually say "SURE!", at which point they ask for details, so I say "Just look up my account number, and you can just apply the special deal to that". At which point they get very confused. Very amusing.

edit: I should mention, yes, I get annoyed too that existing customers don't get any goodies.

If only World Exchange (Xnet) was to run a pay TV service.  Got a cold call on Friday to change me to a plan more suitable to how we use the internet and phone.  And they never ever change the T&C of obsoleted plans, just wait for people to naturally migrate to better plans.

This afternoon I got a call from Sky to switch to MySkyPlus with free install on a 12 month contract, first 6 months is free rental and then $20 per month for the rest of the term. So for free install and total of $120 I'm getting MySkyPlus for a year. HDI ticket is $10 extra if I want it, mainly for movies and sport which I'm not interested in anyway.

So, Sky apparently does offer deals to old customers. Or maybe they read my last post. Or the post of MJB made them rethink policy.

I too have cancelled my subscription.
Hopefully if what I read yesterday, about the comcom going to look at Sky's exclusive deals, is true and they find against Sky we'll see one or more providers pop up using UFB.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

They could offer that already as the majority of households with broadband would be able to coupe with a reduced bit-rate full HD stream. Based on the last time I used iSky I know they have the ability to reduce the bitrate to the extreme...

I don't think I'm likely to send SKY money on a monthly basis until they allow us to pick each channel we want to subscribe to. Of the base package I'd be interested in maybe three channels.

wasabi2k:

$110 is basic + sport + mysky + hd

that's crazy!!
Are there seriously people out there prepared to pay this monthly??

Having experienced pay TV in other countries I find sky seriously overpriced with little choice in putting packages together of something you might wanna watch.

Yes and yes unfortunately.  It's the base that's a killer.  Offer me Sky Sports with an option for HD and yeah I'm there.  Offer me the same but with a $46 base fee and the requirement to pay extra for a device that can physically provide HD and no, I'm not there.

If your an existing subscriber and a better deal comes out, just do what a guy at my work does

Cancel your current plan since its in your name
Your wife starts a new contract with sky, getting the better deal
1 year down the track when her deal expires, he can resign up again to a good deal (since hes been 'away' for 3 months)

The contract is with the person, not the house

I got the deal in question in my letterbox. Base package only, and two free premium options, so sport and movies etc. Seems like a stunning half price deal. Free install and min of just 1 year term.

We couldnt get 2 of the same deal in the one house when me and the flatmate tried.

couple of weeks till I have to lug the mysky box to mt wellington. When I got the cancelling guys calling me back (from a withheld number too, most likly to avoid getting hold of people) They asked why I was cancelling and I said not enough HD stuff, so they then went to offer me a free HD ticket which is useless since I dont have sports, movies or soho, then they went and offered free sports or movies as well, which I cant give a toss about for either.

Reailistically I only use music channels 80% of the time and mostly freeview channels the rest, so youtube on the snap addon can replace music channels (in 1080 instead of what must be about the worst SD I have ever seen) and no add's thanks to ABP.

And I will continue torrenting the discovery history and other channels which have shows that would never make it onto skys butchered versions of the same.
