Er, what features exactly would you want from an EPG? I can view what's on, go 7 days into the future, search for a program, schedule a reminder of an upcoming program (it'll even prompt me to change channel to see it), schedule a recording, or set a series link from it. Frankly, I can't see any other feature it needs? My only problem is that it's slow - but it's not like the box is a Core i7 with 8GB of memory, so it's sort of understandable.

I too would like to see more HD content on current channels as well as new channels such as a decent Sci Fi channel however the capacity argument isn't bolony - there is no more space on the satellite.

But yet they have found room for yet another ad channel? YESSHOP

This argument is wearing real thin with our household.

Thats very true. At the very least get rid of the shopping channels and use that freed up capacity to give us more HD channels.

Yes you can search for a programme......badly....you definitely cannot search on the exact programme name....you have to scroll through pages of potential shows till you stumble on the one you want...

Series Link - only from the planner and not an on screen pop up asking if you want to record once or record series....

The EPG primarily needs something like series stacks as with the larger capacity boxes recording more content - you end up scrolling through 10, 12, 15 pages of recorded shows and its so easy to miss something and watch out of order - series stacks would keep the planner much neater, mean less planner pages to scroll through.

I suspect the antique EPG debate will come to a head if and when Sky embark on proper video on demand via ethernet...the current EPG configuration just won't cope with a proper on demand service.....

Those channels are external to Sky. It doesn't work that way.

QFT, those channels are not created by Sky.

Even if that's true, they could at least enable 60-second skip on the MySky. The firmware option to support it on the current decoders exists, but they made a deliberate decision not to enable this in NZ. I recall reading that it was because they wanted to make sure we didn't skip the ads from their "commercial partners".

Being able to skip 60 second would make things more tolerable, and might even cause me to move to MySky instead of cancelling (which is a serious option). Even better, if they could mark the beginning and ending of breaks with a code (which they obviously can do precisely as they are inserting their own rubbish into them) and put a "skip break" button on the remote. Even better still, provide an option to play recorded material with automatic skipping so you don't even have to push a button.

All of these options would be feasible, if they really cared about customer experience.......

jarledb: Just did the Sky customer survey. If you are asked to do it I would recommend you answer it.

It was a revelation of how I actually feel about Sky.

My main griefs are bad picture quality, lack of HD-channels (I don't do the sport and movie channels) and the horrible EPG.

Other problems (luckily not something I have to deal with every day) were things like their very 90s solution of having to send in credit card information by post - no way of signing up online with your credit card.

And value for money? I pay around 65 dollars a month for 50 channels, of which I might watch 6. Compared to the UK is highway robbery http://www.sky.com/products/tv-packs/entertainment/

YES.... agree.

you should mention their awful awful website too -- you cannot save favorite channels against your account for example.

And, try changing your email address with Sky, that is a saga in itself.

Unsurprising that Sky is so bad though, look at their competitors.

I found the inability to delete channels I didnt get from the up/down buttons and the guide to be very annoying, as was getting prompted for the pin all the time because of their lame parental settings not working when set to the highest setting.

Unfortunately that's set by the BSA too.. Regardless of your parental control setting being set to 18, between the hours of 6am and 8pm Monday to Friday, all 18 rated programmes must be pin blocked.

When did the BSA get in the game of taking control out of the hands of customers and controlling firmware features of products? Another busybody organization ripe for the chop IMO.

It's the BSA Pay-TV code. Has been that way for a while.

Its one of the reasons I got rid of sky when I didnt have mysky and was using a dvr off an old sky box. Too many recordings of an hour of pin entry screen. Since it helps drive mysky rentals I guess sky are happy to keep it.

Retarded design to use the same pin for buying stuff as the one that lets you simply watch what you have already paid for.

It annoys me too, and after reading this I actually went and looked at the code. What seems to be the relevant bit says:

"j If filtering technology is automatically made available to subscribers free of charge, and regularly
promoted by the broadcaster for subscriber use, content classified 18 may screen at any time provided
other applicable broadcasting standards are adhered to."

So I'm not sure why they need to do it the way they do. They have supplied pin-controlled filtering, I have used my pin number to go in and set the content I wish to access in the setup menu, and it should all be compliant with the BSA rules. Having done this the rules don't seem to require them to also over-ride this setting and ask for a pin between 8.00am and 8.30pm regardless of what you have set your preferences to, but they do it anyway.

My reading is that the time restriction for adult material is a default for free-to-air etc, but which isn't required if there is a pin-access option to change the setting - which there is.

I don't have kids in the household,so I'm relaxed about turning it off.

Incidentally, for friends and family that I know who do have kids, the kids invariably know the pin number anyway. And if they weren't told by the parents (which they were) then if they were determined enough they could brute force it (it's only 4 digits), or just use the default pin which virtually no one ever changes.

So typical pointless pettifogging rule - annoys people without any good reason, and doesn't do much to protect those it claims to protect.

I use to be a sky user but am not anymore (not since I moved out of a flat). Not sure how this would impact their business model but if they got more content online and made sports event ppv online at a decent price then I might look at an online only option if it was available. The internet is just so much easier for consuming content and I'm not sure why being tied to a decoder would help them these days?
