Just did the Sky customer survey. If you are asked to do it I would recommend you answer it.

It was a revelation of how I actually feel about Sky.

My main griefs are bad picture quality, lack of HD-channels (I don't do the sport and movie channels) and the horrible EPG.

Other problems (luckily not something I have to deal with every day) were things like their very 90s solution of having to send in credit card information by post - no way of signing up online with your credit card.

And value for money? I pay around 65 dollars a month for 50 channels, of which I might watch 6. Compared to the UK is highway robbery http://www.sky.com/products/tv-packs/entertainment/

My biggest bug-bear isn't the cost (or the programme choice). It's paying that much for the channels, and then getting saturation-bombed with ads. The Box channel is unwatchable, History, Discovery, NatGeo and the BBC are getting close to unwatchable as well. If I cancel my 15 year subscription, which I am now seriously contemplating doing, that will be the reason.

The frequency of ad breaks on History, Discovery, Nat Geo and BBC are completely out of Sky's control.

No it isnt.

They could merge all the breaks and add them at the end of the program, but if they did that people would do something else until the next program starts and so not watch the ads. They choose to keep the ads.

Those channels are external to Sky. It doesn't work that way.

I'd forgive the amount of ads if we got HD versions of Discovery and Natgeo!

QFT, those channels are not created by Sky.

OK,

So do they get a realtime feed of the programs and just stick the ads in then ?
Or do they get sent the programs with breaks at set point where they insert their ads?

They are live feeds off satellite or fibre.

The channel provider dictates where the ad breaks go.

And if you didn't see Sky's breaks you would see breaks from Australian/American/Hong Kong or wherever the channel comes from that Sky covers.

Ahhh - Cool - at last another post picking up on the next to useless prehistoric clunky EPG!

But seriously, NZ should have MOST of its channels in HD format.  The content it brings in from worldwide sources across all the channels is in HD - its not as if its lack of source material.

Obvious candidates for immediate HD upgrading would be Discovery, UK TV, Prime, Nat Geo, History, The Box, BBC Knowledge, Vibe and Living.

I totally get what others have said - your paying a fair bit each month, it should be HD channels all round.

Sky will probabay come up with rubbish excuse about capacity or networks or some such bolony - but they should be pretty ashamed about the lack of HD content they have on their platform......

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

I too would like to see more HD content on current channels as well as new channels such as a decent Sci Fi channel however the capacity argument isn't bolony - there is no more space on the satellite.

mmm - ok - but more research has quickly made me wonder - cant Sky NZ go onto the D3 Satellite  Oz seems to have a huge level of HD content?  But more importantly Optus 10 looks like it will have real potential!  Has that been launched yet?  It could be the answer to NZ's lack of HD!!
