DickDastardly: It does seem that Sky are up to something stopping unused channels...

Some questions - how many channels of SD would have to be stopped to make space for an HD channel?  I wonder if its 3?  Please let it not be a compressed HD channel!

And please let it not be more paying sports channels - but as others have said something useful - like Discovery or Prime...

If a mux (half transponder) is converted to DVB-S2 H.264 then 9 or ten mpeg2 channels have to be reallocated. Four 1920x1080i channels or five 1440x1080i channels can be run on an S2 mux.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Andib: On a semi related note:

On the 8th of December 2014, SKY TV will no longer offer the following channels:

  • Mind Games
  • Playing TV
  • Weather Channel

Looks like they're freeing up some more spectrum. Hopefully they will be replaced by useful channels :D

Obsolete old fashioned interactive services being phased out. They can do this stuff EASILY  in a far better way using data from existing web apps. Once they have everyone moved over to new boxes next year.

Yeah, the weather channel was good. don't know if it gets used much, maybe offer it via the ethernet port in MySky boxes?

ild love to see a use for the ethernet for services like that.

Ild expect, it would be far more efficient.

That's what i thought it was designed for - haven't seen it used at all for anything yet?

actually, the Ethernet port will be livened up at the start of next year and Ethernet cables are starting to be installed onto all mysky decoders as of last week in preparation for the new service coming soon.

Can someone explain 1440x1080i? Thats an odd squareish aspect ratio, are they doing some sort of anamorphic flagging on this to stretch it back to widescreen again using non square pixels?

I think based on a press release Sky put out the other day they are planning to upgrade all transponders to DVB-S2, anyone without a MySky HDi/+ box are getting a new decoder next year from March (for free) over an 18 month period

1.333x1440=1920
It's still technically 16:9 ;)

We are only installing them if a router is within 5metres we're not running cat5/6 if it's further away at this point. It's In preperation for a new streaming service starting first quarter of next year.
