That seems to be the problem... "Commercial reasons".

And a "couple of months" will be too late for a lot of users. Especially when you can't tell them for "commercial reasons". By then, you'll be forgotten by most.
When is Netflix coming? Not in a couple of months.

/devils advocate

Not sure what you think "commercial reasons" means here? Most of these platforms are controlled by the brand in question, so any launch has to be agreed and signed off before it can happen. There's a fair amount of legal and commercial agreements that need concluding before that and any announcement would naturally be coordinated between us and the device partner. Nothing sinister about that.

Longer term, any successful service needs great content and to be available on the devices that consumers want to watch it and that's what we're going after. This goes whether or not other services are in the market (and many consumers will probably subscribe to more than one or dip in and out).

As I said, I was playing devils advocate.

I don't think it's sinister, but by not saying anything because of those reasons, you're potentially putting off a lot of customers.
If you could say "we're in talks with LG, panasonic, xbox, sony, etc" people might think "awesome, it looks like we might have a chance" as opposed to "they're not saying anything, so I'll just get netflix".
People will subscribe to a few, but probably only after they ditch sky, due to costs.

I live in Oz and when presto launched, they didn't support my devices, but stan did. Guess what I use? I can't be bothered checking presto every few weeks to see what they've added. Same with quickflix and their quality... I'm never going to bother.

/currently watching netflix. :D

Complaining that theres a Samsung Smart TV app and not a Panasonic one isn't justified, because they are different platforms and i doubt they share much in the way of development.

Android platforms on the other hand is a different story. I'd question their development process and possibly commercial exclusivity agreements given they only allow select samsung android tablets. Someone should pull the APK and see whether it runs on other platforms.
That you could be justified complaining about.

NonprayingMantis: The fact that they don't have an app for your tv yet is kinda your own fault. You picked a tv that virtually nobody else has ...

My fault?!  .... words fail me

No skin off my nose if Lightbox is on my (minor brand) Panasonic TV or not. If it is, I might have a look and, if any good, stump up some cash. If it's not, I'll skip it and look elsewhere.

I'm not complaining, I'm simply putting out a view on what I think is a flawed launch strategy. I've never seen Lightbox so don't know what I'm missing. Get it in front of me and I'll have a look, otherwise, frankly I don't care.

If it's a flawed launch strategy, then every video streaming company ever has had a flawed launch.
Basically you are saying you have more expertise in running a video streaming business than anybody who ever ran a video streaming business.

Why on earth would it make sense to delay their launch to 1.3m broadband connections just to build an app that, maybe, 5,000 people in nz could use.

Big sigh ....

I'm posting on Spark's commercial strategy, not as a disgruntled consumer. The thread title is 'Does Lightbox has a suicide wish" it's not "I'm grumpy I can't get Lightbox on my TV"

Not being pedantic or anything, but I'm pretty sure there's more than 5000 panasonic smart TVs in NZ.

If there wasn't I doubt they'd be in the market at all.

:D

edit: BTW, Stan launched in Oz with an android app that supports chromecast, nexus 7's and my Sony phone. That's how you launch!

What I don't understand is how Lightbox has the rights to house of cards but they dont release season 3 at the same time as Netflix.

Why would their agreement say the release has to be delayed? To me delaying the release only provokes piracy.

Can someone think of a logical answer?

Maybe they only have riaghts to show old ones. I beleive tv3 were previously showing them, so they may still be showing them. My problem with lightbox content, is that they tend to only have the older episodes, and not the most recent seasons. If the show is old, then they often have all the seasons, but for newer ones, they don't seem to have the seasons for the last 2 years.

Yeah, House of Cards had first runs on TV3 and have second run rights.

We've got plenty of first run stuff on our service (Better Call Saul, Outlander, Suits, Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, Vikings, Black Sails, 24 etc.), but the bigger part of the content will always be library (this is true with other comparable international services as well). For a lot of people, being able to start from episode 1, season 1 and chewing through it with no ads is a great experience - even if the show isn't completely new.

Lightbox - we are online TV.

This is from part of an email from Lightbox on 25/06/2014

"You'll be able to watch as much as you like, whenever you want, on your desktop, laptop or iPad. "

No mention of Samsung TV's then and as i am not a fan of watching tv programs on my desktop pc and i had no ipad (or apple products) , i was a bit anoyed i wouldn't be able to access lightbox in the way i wanted .
And in a few months they had a samsung tv app .

Now thanks to that i can enjoy lightbox , I guess you just have to be patient and other modes of viewing will come available to more customers

I'm in the "release early, release fast" mindset. Don't wait for every platform to be covered otherwise you will never ship the product. Make sure there's no showstopper bugs and delivery lots of iterations.

Which platforms first? The ones with larger audience obviously. Or the ones that can help you get there fast.

Did LG come to the table to help develop anything? Did you get HTC to help test the app to make sure it works in their platform? Would you release a Windows Phone app first then an Android app later?

Lots of questions to answer and as part of the product cycle you have to be quick to the market with the tools you can use.

Really looking forward to Chromecast. Once Lightbox have that then a $59.00 unit will allow the service on any HDMI TV
I have a couple of older relatives where I have installed Chromecast waiting to access (and pay for) Lightbox

This is the main point, if people cant access it the way they want, they wont bother paying(myself included). Hope Spark realizes this.
