rlevis: And anyone notice the game from Samoa was in SD not HD.  I guess Sky couldn't be bothered with the cost of acquiring enough satellite capacity for HD.

I think you will find its more to do with access to HD camera gear at the Samoa end.

There were 2 feeds From Samoa using Intelsat 18 at 180E, one on the KU band SD and encrypted but there was also a Cband feed (free to air but I don't know the details)

Thing that gets me is that they keep touting that it's piracy or theft, it's not, it's a breach of contract.

They didn't hack into the datastream and steal it, they used an authentic account holder's card in an out of contract situation.
How does this make it theft or piracy?

Sure it was in clear violation of his contract, but it wasn't theft.
They (Sky) just seem to jump on the collective bandwagon and try and call everything piracy these days.

If you are accessing content in a manner which you do not have the right to access, then it's copyright infringement. Ergo, it could certainly be argued to be piracy. (It's not theft though, and neither is piracy)

Jus because you have paid for a legitimate version of the content, doesn't mean you cannot commit copyright infringement. I.e. You buy a perfectly legitimate dvd from Amazon. If you show the dvd in a cinema to paying customers, you have committed copyright infringement because the licence the dvd purchase rants you does not extend to public showings.

Depends on whether you are
a) Sky owner/shareholder/etc
b) Have no Sky but found the idea of using someone's relocated Sky really awesome
c) Have Sky and watched it at home

really, I think people do it all the time. but it turns out some know it's wrong, some don't, some get caught, some don't.

a bit like speeding ...

Except breaching terms and conditions of a sky contract is unlikely to cause death or serious injury...

I am not against Sky enforcing their Licencing terms and conditions, but object to how this is twisted around to be 'theft' or 'piracy'....inflammatory and ultimately wrong.

I guess that's exactly my thoughts on this topic. A private individual committed a minor transgression of a contract for a well intentioned one-off event that didn't hurt anyone. To call it piracy or theft is OTT. I am pleased it seems Sky is happy bringing it to the attention of the club and they got some publicity about the use of private contracts for public purposes as a warning to others.

TV3 last night start the "news" saying a club had "broken the law".

Wow. Just wow for this kind of reporting.

Crazy.  The media certainly don't let facts get in the way of a good story these days.  Unfortunately there a plenty of gullible-ites that believe the tripe.

keewee01: I'm leaning the other way - I think the rugby club should be pinged for allowing this to happen. They had to know that it was wrong, and if Sky lets this slide then clubs and societies everywhere are going to try it on.

REality is that a lot of people don't "get" copyright. The number of times I've seen someone finding an image on Google Search and saying "that's what we need in our brochure/website" is incredible. Then you tell them they have to pay licence... They get "but it's free, it's on the Internet!"

Agreed - especially the younger generations. They just don't get it that someone might own the rights to what it is they are downloading from the internet, and that they shouldn't be downloading it.

Alot of those younger generations are now using services like Netflix.

Piracy is an accessibility problem and a price problem, the above services offer great accessibility at a reasonable price.

It's not just not wanting to pay for it, Before NEON to watch Game of thrones legally you had to have a $60+ Sky subscription. Therefore people pirated it, They also don't want to wait months for things to be released here, Even now, if you pay for NEON it's not in HD where if you pirated it, it is.

I watch Shortland Street on Youtube (piracy) because my phone doesn't support TVNZ On Demand for example.

Sure, you could use Unotelly or Globalmode to access overseas providers but according to hollywood and the media giants this is just as bad as piracy, so why bother.

The outdated media companies are the cause of it.

I used to believe the same thing. But there are just too many example of content being made available but STILL pirated to show that while all that is true for some people, it isn't true for a large number of people, and those people simply use it as a convenient excuse to access content and make themselves feel better about it.

The fact that the most popular game of thrones torrents are in SD, not HD shows that.

Also witness that other (older) seasons of Game of Thrones are still hugely downloaded, despite them being available on DVD/Blu-Ray for quite some time.

https://thepiratebay.am/search/game%20of%20thrones/0/99/0

as of right now,  the torrent for Season 1 has almost as many seeds as the highest seeded HD torrent for season 5 (around 3,000)
(the top non-HD versions of season 5 still have between 4,000 and 15,000 seeds)
the season 1 torrent has the 2nd most leeches on it too

The point is HD is available for the pirates but not for the paying people, and when they do get HD they're probably gonna charge extra for it.

I wouldn't want to buy DVD or Bluray, that would require ripping to watch on devices that don't have an optical drive, and storing them, although bluray is very nice on a nice TV.

I don't want to buy a tightly restricted iTunes copy either

They don't want to buy each series or episode individually, they want services like netflix where you pay 1 fee to watch lots of different content

are those torrents illegal in all countries? what about taxation - tax evasion is illegal but tax avoidance is legal. and many uninational and multinational companies arrange their finances to make them legal ... so if you VPN and watch a torrent from a legal country, is that copyright evasion or copyright avoidance?
