It'll get spun as a bad deal for Sky and its shareholders - cos thats the thing to do. But unlike Sparks Lightbox giveaway it wont cost any money to reduce churn. If you believe in the "churn reduction" story.

Sure, the EPL subscription portion goes to Bein, but there is a better than even chance Sky will pick up new subscribers to Basic (+ MySky, HD Ticket etc), so they will see extra revenue.

I think this is the way forward for sports broadcasting. User pays. Stop subsidising the sports packages with the basic package and charge for each what it's actually worth. As a non-sky customer, I'd be ecstatic if they did it for cricket. At the moment I use Fanpass when it's on.

They probably won't, but I think it would be a fairer model and one that would lure me back, as a previous basic-only subscriber who couldn't justify paying $73 per month for it anymore.

The online tv guide on the sky website is cumbersome (to say the least) but gives you an idea of whats on the the next week.

Have a browse on lemontv and neontv to see if there is anything that interests you. If there is stuff you can get elsewhere then probably its not for you.

The average sky household watches about an hour of Sky-only programming per day. But the type pf content varies hugely from household to household.

It commonly thought that Basic subsidises sport. Sky type sports coverage overseas is typically in the NZ$60 mark. Fan pass is that. Move $35 to sport from Basic.

What they are doing with some unbundling of sport os good. It helps everyone not subsidise some sports. I guess it can only work for a service that allows per user fee for Sky?

I think so. Its a bit like added value. may not make them any money, but its adds value to Sky Sport. That helps pickup some new subscribers. I dont buy the backlash. Except in Stuff comments. People whine that Sky is a monopoly, then whine when they lose a sport to competition.

I read that too. The interviewer asked the question three times of the SKT spokesperson: SKT doesn't get a cent.

PS have you noticed in the Stuff comments that people love to say "I've just been on the phone to Sky and have cancelled my subscription" or "Bye Bye Sky". It's just so childish. I bet none of these people even own a TV.

Agree. Although I love sport and will watch almost anything that's on if I'm bored there's only about half a dozen sports I'll actually plan my day to sit and watch, and of those only football (soccer), Aussie rules and test rugby are "must haves". AFL is currently free on Duke but I'd be happy to pay for football and rugby, and maybe a nominal pay-per-view fee to watch individual NFL and MLB games for the teams I support and the superbowl/world series (but I'm not interested in seeing every game, every week). If this meant the basic package was cheaper and I didn't have to pay for the rest of the sports I don't really watch, I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

I was saying to my wife last week that we'll probably have six pop-up channels for the Olympics and I won't watch any of them, except maybe when rugby sevens is on. It's just not my thing.

@fizzychicken: on PLP I could watch all 10 games at the same time by flicking backwards and forwards, and it would guarantee my team's games would always be showing. 2 channels and 3 popups means someone weeks you are not going to be able to see some games live...or am I wrong?

I don't see the problem. Not all 10 games in each round are played at the same time anyway - there are games (UK time) Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening and often Monday and Tuesday evenings too. As the season progresses and teams get involved in domestic cups and European competition then there will be matches rescheduled to Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well. So you won't be able to watch "10 games at the same time" but if you did, most of them wouldn't be live anyway.

One thing I would like to add is that the true cost to watch the channel in HD is $11.96 + HD ticket $9.99. Plus if I'm reading between the lines correctly the second channel won't be HD?

So while they may not be making any money from the pop-up channel they will be by charging me the HD ticket.

It will probably still be the best option for me - with ease of use for recording games via the Mysky etc.
