SirHumphreyAppleby:

I looked at the manual for the BWT720 online, and it doesn't even mention the ability to record from the composite input. You'd think that would be an important selling point.

Pg 64 of the printed manual does. Tells you all about recording from external equipment. It should be an important selling point. Very handy for copying old videotapes as long as they're not copy protected although a video capture device for PC is better.

SirHumphreyAppleby:

PSLog: Yeah. Looks like composite. The device is the DMR-XW390.

So....
Assuming a new Sky box has composite output:
Connect the Sky box to the DMR
Set timer recording on the DMR to channel = AV
Leave the Sky box on and tuned to the appropriate Sport channel.
Set the timer recording to start recording the AV channel at 5am for 2 hours.

Is it as simple as that?

Should be, yes.

(The new Sky boxes do have Composite output - it's the RF out that they no longer have).

OK. Thanks for that. It looks like I'll just buy Sky Basic with the sport add on.

Hmmm, there was mention of having to pay $15 to allow recording. Do I need that, too?

No you should not. That is just to use the Sky feature. Someone may correct me but I'm pretty sure there is no form of copy protection on the composite signal.

Who cares? But for the record...

"10.2 You must not record, copy, play, publish, sell, distribute or otherwise use or retransmit the whole or any part of the Selected Service, any additional programming, products or services referred to in clause 5, or the Signal under any circumstances for any purpose whatsoever other than for your personal, non-commercial use within the HOME as permitted by the Copyright Act 1994."

PSLog: Thanks for that.
They don't seem to be answering today, so I'll try again on Monday.
Someone may know:....is Sky sport a "Premium Channel"?
If so it may work out at
$29.00 for Sky plus MySky+
$39.90 for Sky Sport
ie $68.90 per month or $413 (minimum of 6 months) to watch the Americas Cup.
THAT could work :-)

Yes it is.

I had a friend sign up for the deal last night

It should work out as

Basic+Mysky and add Sports - should be around $39 per month

You can also add HD for the normal price of $10 per month

You can cancel after 6 months which gives you the AC, the lions tour, Bathurst, super rugby, netball, all blacks games....

Hmm think I'm convincing myself here lol

Hey Clinty
I hope you are right.

Can you tell me where you get your figure of $39 a month from?

From the Sky Deals thread linked before

At the very worst I know you can get SkyBasic + Mysky + sports and another premium channel (movies,Soho etc) for $50 as that is what my friend got last night. He had Soho in the $50 and also added BeIN for the football as an extra, came out around $60 per month including free install.

The 0800 4 Skytv number is a marketing company so probably won't answer till Monday now

I've never used Fanpass, but since you have a chromecast, could you just subscribe to Fanpass for the duration of the America's Cup event and watch it on demand? (provided Sky will include the America's cup as an  on demand service)

$99/month is steep but there are no 6 month contracts.

Sounds interesting.

But do you need to already be a Sky subscriber to do this - or can you just subscribe to Fanpass - "naked" as it were?

No need to be a Sky subscriber, it's just an alternative way to subscribe to sky sports.

You'll need to check if the America's cup will be on demand. It would pay to call Sky about that, as the America's cup is not yet on the FanPass website.

Yeah. Looked at the Fanpass schedule. Looks like we should see May27th schedule tomorrow.
Looks like the ideal solution for me. Don't even have to record it because you can watch any time after the event - up to 24 hours later

Very pleased to hear about this from you guys,.. Thanks heaps.

While Fan Pass is likely to still be cheaper for you, given you only need access to one (albeit long) event, the deal may not be be as good as it seems. It was announced earlier this month that Fan Pass was due to go up to $100 per month, and that the daily/weekly passes were being discontinued. That may be the $99 Kiwifruta referred to, but it's not reflected in current pricing on the site.

Yes, still sounds cheaper for me (and more convenient, with no recording needed)
Does the 0800 3 skytv number handle Fanpass as well?
Might need to miss the first couple of day's racing to ensure I don't miss the last couple of days if there are any delays in the schedule. That would rip my nightie.
