All these posts in this thread and no-one has addressed my specific OP question - except @ockel who gave me a nod in the right direction. This almost immediately became just another ‘I hate Sky’ and ‘what Sky should do’ thread - quite disappointing.

Hard to say. They always said a full app (never mentioned a box scenario. Given that this is progress, and MySky holds the FTA channels, and this progress would create inconvenience having to switch to another box for FTA, I feel it may well do carry FTA. But no basis for evidence. Surely there is no added ongoing cost for Sky to have the FTA apps? Although who would write them if they needed to be compatible? Im unsure of compatibility issues across various Android boxes or versions, that appears the only catch?

You perhaps didnt see my post before your post (same time).

Q is the box that is used by SKY UK. It has netflix amongst other options.

Suspiciously, the Q has the same functionality as you described in your original post.

1. Use of analog output decoders for 18 years straight to suck as much money out of the crap boxes as possible.

2. Not transitioning bulk of transponders to DVB-S2 because of a tight wallet not wanting purchase of news and doco HD streams which will cost.

3. SD playout on Neon.

4. 720p playout on Fanpass with only the 4 channels forcing purchase of sat subscription.

All above have/had technical solutions (that cost) so all are Sky technology failures. That's just the start.

Until Sky releases more in-depth information it is a guessing game.

The March 2018 Investor Presentation does mention ‘a box scenario’ - it talks about a new IP box with recording capability like the existing one and an Apple TV-like ‘puck’ running Android.

Their main product offering has been quite solid with few issues. The same cannot be said for Vodafone and Freeview. Their streaming services have not been as good but I wonder if that has something to do with rights issues.

As for their possible new services it's too early to fire up the great New Zealand knocking machine.

Further to the proposed services no matter what price point it is offered at there will be a sizeable group that still won't buy it as they believe they are entitled to have it free.

If they just rolled out an app that would work on iOS and an app that would work on Android (including Apple TV and Chromecastable), they they would have most of the market. And they wouldn't have to outlay any funding to develop hardware, or any capital to purchase/install hardware (and could gradually phase out their entire satellite and installer infrastructure), with customers having to sort the hardware and connectivity themselves. They they could just concentrate on the backend infrastructure, without having to purchase, deploy and maintain hundreds of thousands of decoder units.

They have to have something to send the guy in a van to go and install at peoples houses. Some people cant even plug a HDMI cable in because they just dont want to try. They need a place to give a monthly fee to that will look after all their stuff.

If they just have apps and people have to buy hardware then what are they paying the person in the van to come and do?

This happens every time? And this covers the vast majority of viewership in any given year? Id like to see the technical failure ratio for Sky, Freeview, Dish, etc. Just the other day a new Freeview feature disappears. While Sky may need to work on SkyGo for a popular sporting event where the viewer numbers using SkyGo are too high, i.e. legit users and those that borrowed a login, there are many other fish in the sea that should be caught first

That is mentioned in the article, a stand alone app not tied to the box, undetermined timeline. I thought that would be a very low hanging fruit, FanPass is already that.

Sky are saying there will be an advanced IP STB with storage, an IP-only puck and a series of companion apps. Reading the presentation more carefully, I see that regarding the apps:

"Supported platforms - iOS, Android, web browsers, Apple TV, Xbox One, PS4, Chromecast, Samsung Smart TVs, Sony TVs (Android TV), LG TV (WebOS), Roku and Amazon Fire TV."

Sounds like if you have a main-brand smart TV, you'll be able to access Sky via their app - much like Netflix, Lightbox etc.

I guess they feel they still need a STB to keep the faith with their heartland customers.
