Just saw this story in the NZ Herald:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12166262

Owing to our cabling constraints at home, I'm particularly interested in the mention of:

"... On-demand is in. Sky will make some progress here when it releases an Apple TV-style, Android-powered unit that only works over broadband, and features Netflix (and perhaps Lightbox) apps, as soon as February... "

Anyone heard of this or know anything or have comments? It would suit us very much if this service included the live FTA TV channels that Sky currently supplies via its STB/satellite offering - but maybe that's unlikely or too much to ask.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Have a look in the investor briefing day presentation from earlier this year. It talks about it and the product path.

If Sky want me back as a customer, they need to released a product like Kayo, and a similar price point (~$30 per month). Until then, I'm sticking with Kayo.

Maybe its a bit too late. A lot of people have lost confidence in the brand over the last few years due to tech failures and greedy pricing.

I'm really interested only in whether the new broadband service/s - i.e. new STB and the puck - will still include live FTA TV.

In the presentation, where they show the proposed new Sky Basic offering, I don't see TV1, 2 or Three there.

However, later in the presso, on the page headed 'Sky's Next Gen Customer Promise' they say 'Safety Net of Traditional TV'.

So ... maybe?

PS: I really asked only one specific question - but I guess it's inevitable that this will become just another general 'I hate Sky' and 'what Sky should do' thread - that's not what I'm asking. Sigh...

Does that work in NZ?

I guess you need a VPN/DNS service?

How does the billing work?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

If NZ had another 20 million people living in the country such a price point may be possible.

Yes, works in New Zealand with a VPN. Billing is to my Australian credit card. They mention that Paypal is coming soon.

I don't think that is the issue. Sky offer Spark customers FanPass for $30/month, although I don't know how much (if anything) Spark are subsidising the offer. Also the Foxtel equivalent of Basic + Sport + HD is AU$68/month, which is slight more expensive compared to Sky's NZ$65/month.

They should be merging with Foxtel or something similar. Its time we some of these outfits treated NZ/AUS as a single market.

That's unfortunately not how TV rights work. Most are still stuck in the days of geo based rights so the same thing can be sold 150+ times over around the world.

Sky's problem is that they'll be paying a similar $ for some events as what Foxtel pay, despite Foxtel having a much larger customer base to split the cost over.

Wow, by February, a device to stream Lightbox and Netflix. Holding nothing back and pushing the technology envelope to the max!

Deck chairs. Titanic. Bye.

This dude is going to have a hard time trying to win subscribers back. Fellet has cast a long (and complacent) shadow over Sky progressing/growing, IMO.

I don't understand why Sky has to release new subscriber hardware at all?

If they just rolled out an app that would work on iOS and an app that would work on Android (including Apple TV and Chromecastable), they they would have most of the market. And they wouldn't have to outlay any funding to develop hardware, or any capital to purchase/install hardware (and could gradually phase out their entire satellite and installer infrastructure), with customers having to sort the hardware and connectivity themselves. They they could just concentrate on the backend infrastructure, without having to purchase, deploy and maintain hundreds of thousands of decoder units.

Thats my opinion also, the best cost saving is not dealing with a box, just deal with the iOS, ATV4 and Android app. If the app is up, and the service is up, thats where support ends.

However, my conundrum is F1. I can drop Sky and get Spark, but I still have some sport I want Sky for, a new app, even if it was amazing wont help that. Will the new puck be a rental or buy for $50? If so, that saves MySky rental, and if prices eased somewhat, that helps. If Fanpass included popups, problem solved, but then there may be an exodus off Sky to Fanpass. Although if Sky Basic and Sport is $56 as it is now, (non recording) and Fanpass with popups is $60, then no revenue less, and problem solved.BUT I think Fanpass does not have OD, it just has highlights on OD and no replays?

economies of scale and no re-invention of the wheel would suggest this might be the concept......
