The announcement on the opening post states:

  • Due to specific content rights, SKY GO App downloads are not able to be viewed outside New Zealand

I am told that Sky has limited the download to go feature temporarily to SD, but will likely provide HD downloads in the near future as they ensure they have the bandwidth to ensure a good customer experience.

Isn't that exactly what was said about Neon, their more elaborate excuse for SD was that they didn't know they would be competing with Netflix. Fast forward and still SD. Nothing to do with bandwidth, all about being cheap.

Neon is HD, West World for example.

At the bottom of page, “What is picture quality like?”

It’s the Dolby digital I miss.

For a tablet size screen I doubt HD would make much difference.

I recently purchased a Huawei Mediapad M5 10.8" tablet - my prime purpose being media consumption. When the tablet first arrived, Netflix was SD as the tablet had yet to receive the appropriate Widevine update. That update has now been received and Netflix is now HD on the tablet.

Personally, I found Netflix SD pretty much unwatchable, so I didn't bother watching Netflix initially. The move to HD made a significant difference - for me, the difference is night and day.

That said, I am someone who notices resolution differences - and it matters to me. For you average viewer, it may be less of an issue.

Yep, HD on a tablet that can show it will look sharper.
Just if I was concerned about the best quality picture and being immersed in what I’m watching, I’d wait until in front of big screen TV.

I’d never watch for the first run “Star Trek Discovery”, if I was rewatching it though then might watch on Tablet.

So you can download to watch later, but do you still need an internet connection to do so? (The watching, not the downloading). Maybe just for validation.
Otherwise, as others have said, how does it know where you are? If that is the case then my two main use cases, on flights and at overseas hotels where wifi is useless and expensive, then the utility of this is limited.

But hey, anything Sky adds at no additional cost is good, isn't it?

I've got someone coming to stay next week, who's into Sport, so will test Sky Go next week, if no answer by then. See if it needs internet connection.

With the other company if I use VPN on Ipad Pro (non cellular)  it works, but not on Iphone it stays on NZ programming, I suspect same may be true of Sky Go. Don't think iPad has GPS chip in it, sometimes good not to have all the bells and whistles.

considering sky go is an app on a mobile device this is not hugely relevant

Does it work overseas if you connect back to your home VPN?

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.
