Easy solution: Get Sky over fibre. This might involve consent from the neighbour... which they might grant in a heartbeat if it'll get rid of the dish!

Watched the neighbors getting sky installed on their house just before Christmas. Sky dish installed on the second story roof by a Sky tech on a ladder. No scaffolding. No messing around. He was up and down in half an hour with a nice clean install. Didn't see any working at height's kit either.

A friend was a Sky contractor until recently.

Sky policy is now to NOT install a dish on the roof, and to move it off the roof if work is to be done on the dish (e.g. fix LNB). This is because of the high costs for OSH compliance of working on the roof.

A Sky contractor could lose his contract if he was dobbed in for working on a roof without the safety rope and/or scaffolding.

The complainant should be thankfull that the dish hides the ugly power pole in his nice view of the garden.

Some elements of compliance are not actually for the sake of safety but are to stimulate the economy. A whole new scaffolding industry has now been created that provides employment to 100's if not 1,000's of people. It's a bit like having overly complicated tax rules - it creates jobs for accountants.

I have seen multiple jobs at work where it took longer and was more dangerous to erect scaffolding that the original job that that needed access to the roof. (eg - 3 scaffolders repeatedly scaling scaffolding, lifting and swinging heavy pipes around at height for over an hour so that a single plumber could spend 20 minutes on the roof applying some silicon sealant).

Do they really not install them on your roof anymore? I thought it depended on the property?

I'm the reverse. Every house I buy with a Sky dish on it sees the dish go to the tip soon after.

Netflix (free with Spark credit) / Neon / Lightbox (with Spark for free) ......for the win.

Spending a thousand a year on Sky never appealed.

I was just referring to the case in general of no roof installs, did look at photo.

If the roof is a no go area, and next time I need something done if they want to move the dish, I’ll just tell them to take the decoder and I won’t bother.

They’d need to go on roof to move dish anyway. LNB replaced in last couple of years, they just used a ladder.

Yeah our dish was moved from soffit mount to roof a couple of years ago after repeated interference from large trees that partially blocked signal.

We've had several LNB swaps over the years.

Like you, if they came for any maintenance and they wanted to move the dish off the roof, I'd tell them to take it and never come back.

Overall, it's a pretty pathetic 'story.' Even more pathetic that NZ Herald would waste space and time publishing it and the BS it contains. The guy didn't have any garden view to start with - there's some trees across the road and a bit of sky. The satellite dish has little impact on either of those.

I think the chap is merely upset about the the dish being located where it is so complained to NZ Herald, who've obviously got a lot of spare time on their hands decided to try and sexy the story up. "Man doesn't like being able to see neighbours Sky dish" would be a more accurate headline but wouldn't get the eyeballs this type of click-bait rubbish attracts.

I happen to know this property because one of our best mates lives right next door - it's their fence you can see in the photo. Believe me - there is certainly no 'lovely garden' anywhere in the complainer's sight - pretty ugly in fact. I'm sure you're also right about him being upset about where the dish has been located - but I think I probably would be too TBH.
