Having to remember to record sports in advance seems primative after using spark sport.

Opps I forgot I wanted to watch xyz no drama it's all on demand or if I heard a particular sport was good/close I could go online and watch it. There were a number of biathalon races I wanted to watch on sky that I either missed or could find by trolling through slow slow menu options on sky.

On demand vrs catchup being different things on sky..

Sky is rubbish product protected by rugby monopoly

Pretty sure there won't be 4K sports on offer for a long time. It's a 4K Capable play back box, meaning you can play your amazon prime, netflix etc at 4K.

But if you can "stream" 4K content then why not stream 4K sport? Sky won't have the ancient satellite system to deal with. I understand local sport won't be filmed in 4K but why not some international stuff?

I go to the super Rugby Highlander games and have sat less than 10m from TV camera for last 10 years.... The cameras have 4k on side of them for last 3 years....

The outside broadcast trucks that cameras connect back to are not 4K capable, part of the deal re: sale of OSB was to upgrade the trucks by 2025 at cost of $50M as Sky was incapable of funding this.

Money. For Sky to playout 4K via IPTV CDN or sat they have to have the necessary equipment which they do not have.

I imagine Sky Broadband customers could be high up on the list too.

I aren't one by the way.

I'd be interested in how they will handle multiroom scenarios.

One can only hope that all channels will be 1080p at a minimum..

If the source material isn't, then you would simply be getting upsampled.

Much of the discovery content isn't in HD. Food, etc etc. It wasn't recorded in 1080. Even in the US Food TV is low res.

It's about bandwidth and processing. They don't have the capability further down the chain yet.

Putting aside the issue of bandwidth via satellite which is unfixable with old satellite technology, I think it woulsld be pathetic if sky launches fibre based service which doesn't include 4k.

I pay sky a lot more than Netflix and amazon combined and they offer 4k programming and already f1, ozzy cricket, Premier league are available in UK in 4k.

Many of the YouTubers I subscribe to broadcast in 4k and some are literally one bloke in his shed...

As I said, it has 4K capability, it will playback 4K content from Netflix, Prime, Youtube same as your other Netflix playback devices, but if the source isn't 4K you won't get 4K.

Imagine you have 100 random viewers... On a given night 30 of them might be watching various shows over a 5-6 hour window.

Now imagine 100 random viewers on a night with a major live sports event.. You might have 50-60 of them watching the same stream at the same time.

Which puts more peak load on a network as well as the back end infrastructure?

And that's one reason 4K live sport is a challenge.

Cheers - N

Unlikely. Reason CNN, Fox, BBC etc are still SD (at least not still 4:3) is all about money.

Lolmil116:

What would be great is a PS5 (or even PS4/Xbox) app as Sky have in the UK. Designed to be used with Sky Go, but would open up subscriptions for those with no dish/box

this, but adding Apple TV into the mix.

There is nothing wrong with 4K via satellite, Foxtel have just this week announced increased 4K programming, they have 3 UHD channel running already

Fox Sports Ultra HD 1
Fox Sports Ultra HD 2
Movies Ultra HD

https://www.foxtel.com.au/shop/ultra-hd.html

It means more Aussie mainstream sports will have 4K source feeds for SKY NZ to take.

as for the new Sky box using Fibre... that could just be marketing talk for "streamed over internet"

I've been happy with Vodafone TV streaming via fibre as it's removed weather interference with I found common in Wellington when I was using Sky Satellite. I can remember things like All Blacks World Cup knockout matches being unwatchable because there was heavy rain and wind at the same time etc. Would be happy if the new Sky Box worked in the same way as VTV without the need for satellite.
