Never been a Sky fan. Though I do miss my cricket and AFL but still can not justify Sky price just for that. NZ should never have sold OB rights. I think Sky will loose more customers with this new thingy.

Apart from sport all my entertainment is either FTA or Netflix & NEON, then as required others (pay for a month - binge - hold or cancel - repeat when needed) all via TV box. My trusty Panasonic PVR still gets some use for FTA recording but not like it used to.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Does anyone know if either of the new devices will carry free-to-air channels like the current Sky box does?

@outdoorsnz:

And you can expect bugs!

What isn't clear is do you own the new box? i.e. Cancel account, will it still function as an android TV box or do you have to post back?

I think as I mentioned before, a Sky account is required.

And YouTube?  Presumably yes, but it doesn't say.

They surely would be, its just the delivery that's changing, not the platform (aside from adding a few apps)

It's running Android TV so I assume yes.

But if the Sky Pod is effectively a platform for Sky Go, it might not have free-to-air channels (Sky Go doesn't have TV1, TV2, etc at the moment. Prime is the only FTA channel).

Here is the chart from the OP - "watch live and on-demand":

I recall seeing an earlier announcement that the new Sky box would not require a Sat feed - that it could be internet-only.  As I am in a location with Fibre and frequent rain-fade when it rains so I paid attention to this.  However no mention in todays email.

It's in the OP, please read it:

"Today Sky revealed the Sky Pod, an IP-only replacement option for the soon-to-close VodafoneTV service.

The Sky Pod will enable access to Sky TV, on demand content and streaming apps without the need for a satellite dish."

I was talking about the new Sky Box - not the Sky Pod.  I recall seeing that it could feed either from satellite or from Internet.

Well done Sky, you've taken over a product and made it worse.

2 main issues:
1) Requires a satellite dish, why? If they are able to provide Vodafone TV over the internet, why can't the new box do this? Seems to be a backward step to me.

2) Why can the Pod Watch Live or From the Start, but the Box can't. And the box can't scroll back, but the Pod can Another backward step

In Australia, there is the Fetch TV Box, comes with a 1TB drive and ability to record up to eight channels, and you pick and pay for what channel packages you wish to subscribe to. Just like this new Sky box announced.

But Fetch TV are very sneaky, you can only watch what you have recorded to the hard drive, so long as you maintain your subscription. If you end your sub then anything you already recorded/saved to the hard drive locally, cannot be viewed.

So, I would like Sky to comment if they will be implementing this totally negative feature on their new box.

When I signed up to Sky with Vodafone, they gave me the VTV box for free, so I could view the services I was paying for.

If I go and and sign up to Sky today, the box is free so I can view the services that I pay for.

I don't really get why we have to pay for these new devices they announced today, as I would assume that if you cancelled your services you would need to return the devices?

I suspect the Sky Pod was a bit of an afterthought when the Vodafone TV issue emerged, and has been put together hastily to fill a gap. The Sky Box has probably been in development longer, and scrolling back wasn't part of the specification at that point.

It does seem a bit weird to not allow the Sky Box to operate without a satellite dish.

I wonder if they'll add these missing capabilities to the Sky Box at a later date?
