No specific requirement that the Sky box be connected to Internet though that I'm aware of.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Not for the 'old' ones, no.  They work quite well without internet connection (though you can connect internet to download content on demand)

But the new Sky Box requires an internet connection - and in my experience doesn't work too well without one (which disappointed me).

Reference: https://www.sky.co.nz/products

  • Requires Dish
  • Internet connection required Recommended minimum download speed of 100Mbps

Probably going to be one more reason for people not to upgrade to the new box.

I would be very surprised if Sky were NOT tracking what people are watching on the box.
At a minimum what channel is currently being viewed.

I just had Sky Sport, free for a month as a "Sky Rewards" benefit.

As the month ended, I got a very detailed summary, rolled into flowery marketing speak, sayin things like "You enjoyed XYZ hours of football and the Recent ABC game was of particular interest to you" and it even broke down the sports I watched, the times I most often watched etc. They were trying to show how much I enjoyed it and sell me on subscribing to the Sports channels.

If anything it put me off using Sky altogether, knowing I was so heavily monitored

Actually of course they'd be able to monitor what channel is being watched, they wouldn't restrict SkyGo users though from watching that same channel though seeing as that is the point of the app.

From their website this is quite ambiguous...

"You’ll still be able to watch Sky Go on up to two devices (in addition to watching on your Sky Box or Sky Pod) but you’ll no longer be able to stream the same channel simultaneously on those devices."

I presume devices means "sky go devices" and not the box. I will be quite pissed if its one device and the box cannot watch the same content at the same time. Quite okay if its two sky go devices though

I tried it this morning. Was able to watch Sport 1 on both my set top box and on Sky Go without any issues.

Thanks, I thought that would be the case.
