WaffleMakerMan:
ockel: Is this because you cant get Sky HDi (sic) or due to your television set?

Na its because I don't want to buy a HDi and cannot get FreeviewHD where I live :)

Argh...

You don't buy a HDi. Sky own it..

Ahhh..... its not because you CANT get it, its because you WONT get it.  If you want the good stuff you gotta pay for it.  But I hear the plight of many people like you outside the DTT footprint.  Theres an online petition about that linked somewhere from these forums......

Sky have updated some of the DVB data to map all of the SD channels off the TVNZ freeview transponder, but that hasn't been added to the STB line up yet.

Hi Steven, so does this appear to include TV1/2 or will sky remain with there own TV1/2 feeds on 12671.

Cheers
Cyril

The update allows for them to map in any of the TVNZ channels off 12483H into their STBs. As this transponder will be carrying the regional TV One feeds I'm assuming they will pull the SD transmissions straigh off there. Shortly after the 1st June I'd expect them to stop their own feeds on 12671H

Come the 1st July they would then map TVNZ 6+7 off the same transponder.

At the moment they are still only showing 6 HD feeds off 12331 and 12358, with no sign of the new TV One and TV 2 HD transmissions.

So will us poor Freeview DVB-S viewers be able to get TV1 & TV2 in HD?
If not why not?
I thought the only reason that Freeview DVB-S was not in HD is because of the bandwidth required and cost.
Would this require a DVB-S2 card in the computer?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Sky are managing the HD broadcasts over DVB-S and have chosen unsuprisingly to encrypt them.

Will it ever look as good as it presently does on Freeviw HD?

Would it be correct that Sky will need to transmit new HD broadcasts for TV1/2 as the current Freeview DVB-S ones are SD? Will these even be compatible with earlier Sky boxes? Where will they find the bandwidth without dropping the bitrates of several other channels even lower than they are now? Several SD channels are such poor quality now, they make illegal Divx cam movies look good.

Yes Sky will put up its own encrypted HD streams of TV1/2, and from what Steve tells us will be pointing SD subs to the FreeView streams, which of course are compatible with older Sky STBs, Sky subs already pull Parliment and TeReo (if not a few others) off FreeView muxs, one assumes the HD TV1/2 will go in the current DVB-S2 muxs Sky use for other HD services, so should not impact on SD services, infact should free up a bit of space.

My understanding is there is only room for 1 more HD channel on the DVB-S2 muxs.
The quality of HD is going to take a hit if this is the case, might have to see what blue ray discs are for hire.

I'd much rather have Discovery and NatGeo HD than Tv1/2...

Sky have just updated their network table to include HD streams for TV One and TV 2.

Their updated HD lineup is

12331H 22500 DVB-S2
 * SID 1161 - Sky Sport 1 HD
 * SID 1162 - Sky Sport 2 HD
 * SID 1163 - Sky Movies HD

12358H 22500 DVB-S2
 * SID 1164 - SM Greats HD
 * SID 1165 - TV 3 HD
 * SID 1171 - TV One HD
 * SID 1172 - TV 2 HD

So it looks like they have decided to squeeze an additional channel into 12358, so I'll be very interested to hear on video quality reports from this update.

I can't confirm if any services are being broadcast as I don't personally have Sky.

Steve
