as I understand it, all NRL is filmed in HD from Nine, but not much is broadcast in HD, even in Australia. As I understand it, they lack the uplink bandwidth to get the games out in HD, as there is only one uplink they can use and if anything else needs it, they must go SD [paraphrased from something I read a while back]. Heck, even Origin wasn't in HD this year.

A large portion of all this argument comes down to what is available in HD. This is particularly in regard to content sourced from Australia. Ten/OneHD are the only network which really do anything in true HD for sport, neither Nine nor Seven do much sport in HD at all (exception being cricket this summer just been on Nine)

DarkKnight08:
MarkX: I love my NRL and English soccer and would love all of the games to be in HD but I accept that this is not possible at this stage. I am grateful for the amount of HD content that is provided though.

Finally the HD ticket is only $10 a month. This is very cheap when compared to how much HD content we actually get. Just my opinion for what it is worth.

If your not from Sky, or do not have any friends from Sky, how do you know the NRL is not available at this stage? That news has not been announced and only someone who works for either Sky or Channel 9 would know that.

Secondly, you say showing someone playing tennis in the advert does not imply every Tennis will be HD? Yes but it implies some Tennis will be in HD. Was the Australian Open in HD = No, Was the French Open in HD = no, is wimbeldon going to be in HD = no? So they are lieing. Your argument will always fail because NHL is live in HD now on Sky and that costs more than the French Open. I know this because I contacted Foxtel who said they will not show NHL as it costs more than the Tennis and no one will watch it. Why the hell is it on Sky then  here? Makes you think. From Sky's website:

"John Fellet was born in Arizona, United States". Deceptive piece of sh*t gets things in HD that he wants to watch. Wait for NFL in HD in a few months.

Darknight.  Maybe I didn't make myself clear with my comment about the NRL. I did not state that it is not available at this stage. I just accepted that we are not getting coverage of every game in HD.

Having said this though, I was in Australia recently and they definitely aren't getting every NRL game in HD either. Foxtel definitely has the Monday night game in HD but that may be it.  Cheers.

MarkX, point taken. Sky told me that the NRL link from Channel 9 is not physically available. I assumed that you would have known this but my mistake if you meant that we arent getting it at this stage. My apologies

As for Australian's not getting every match in HD. That is true. Foxtel are worse than Sky. They only show Monday Night NRL and that is sometimes referred back to SD. But I reckon that is only because they have only 1 HD Sports Channel. Channel 9 however have every single game in HD through 9 HD. I would like to see the Channel 9 NRL games come on Sky in HD as that would be more important and allow us to see the coverage of the SOO or Grand Final in HD.

I do not understand how we saw the Cricket from Channel 9 in HD and now the NRL HD link is not available?

Also the 20/20 Cricket World Cup is being broadcast in HD over in England, and also in HD on Channel 9 in Australia. Why are we not getting this in HD? Isn't Cricket or NATIONAL summer sport? Why the hell cant Sky something that is so important such as the "WORLD CUP" which we take on the world in HD yet the free to air channel's in Australia can afford it? No.. We get NHL/Nascar in HD.

See the image for proof 20/20 World Cup is in HD:

just because it's shown on an a stand alone HD channel, it doesn't mean it's actually in HD, a lot of content is upscaled. This especially applies for Nine and Sky Sports UK.

ESPN Star are the host broadcaster for the T20 World Cup, not Sky Sports UK.  For this reason, I suspect the games aren't actually broadcast in HD, but I will check with someone I know who has Sky HD in the UK.

The games are being broadcast by Sky UK. It is in HD in the UK. I know this because a friend of mine is enjoying it on Sky Sport HD 1 in the UK. Each and every game is in HD. The same commentary team from the England vs WI are also part of the coverage. Australia/SAF/England/US are all getting the HD feed. Everyone but us. We get to watch John Fellet's NHL.

As a side not . Did anyone yesterday see the Indy card racing live from Texas on One Sport. The US broadcaster had a HD logo but as is usual with NZ FTA networks it was shown here as SD..

DarkKnight08 - you are quite correct, I have also had it confirmed that Sky UK are showing T20 World Cup in true HD. Time to complain to Sky.

Not sure how easily TVNZ can source Indycar stuff in HD, as all they can get easily is that low res crud from ESPN (via Versus or ABC depending on the race). Annoying we can't get the Indycar in HD at all.

Yes, and what is even more disgraceful is that SkyNZ took Sky UK's HD feed for the England vs WI series, and fingers crossed will take their HD feed again for the Ashes. How the heck did they then decide to take the SD feed? We need people to complain so Sky know that this just isn't acceptable.

the only logical reason I can think of is that Sky have signed an agreement with Sky UK for all home series for $x, as an HD feed. But the rights holder (ESPN Star I think) for the T20 World Cup wanted more than Sky was willing to pay for the HD rights.

Still awaiting my answer on why it's not in HD.

allstarnz I do not know who you asked at Sky for your answer, but I also posted a question yesterday and this is what I got from JF:

Grant,

Thanks for the advice. Keep in mind NHL in an effort to grow the sport puts out all their international feeds in HD. NASCAR and PGA golf do the same. When I asked the ICC why they do not do the same they tell me that most of the Cricket World has not taken up that much HD yet. This will change and I suspect within a year or two all cricket feeds will be in HD.

He completely dodged the question. I do not accept his explanation about the NHL. He obviously bought the HD feed or else we would have seen it on ESPN. If there was no SD feed for the NHL then he should not buy it at all because the cost of it would be a burden compared to the "number of hd viewers" as John keeps saying. Last week he replied to me on the 20/20 WC HD issue "We will see how much extra it costs".

why do you have such a problem with the NHL being in HD? Surely it's better being in HD than SD? ESPN don't own the rights to the NHL any more, the contract is owned by Versus (who incidentally now also own the rights to IRL now too) with a little help from NBC in the finals series.

Got the bog standard copy and paste answer to my question....

The move to HD across the world is very expensive. Each HD truck costs around $25 million US and the move for broadcasters to HD will take some time. We hope you can appreciate that not all events we purchase are available to us in High Definition.

once again, I say bollocks.

Incidentally Fox Sports Australia don't seem to be showing T20 on their HD channel either

Correct. Foxtel's T20 coverage is on the SD channels only.
And they have the NHL on Fox Sports HD.

It must be a conspiracy by both Foxtel and Sky to deprive audiences of the chance to watch the T20 tournament in HD. Shame on them!
