adamj: Don't Foxtel already broadcast these channels in HD?

yes, just shift the channels over from C1 to D3.  Even less drama for them, as they are co-located at 156°E

Yes your right, but ESPN HD was specifically produced for Foxtel and they recieve it via Fibre Link this is the difficulty that Sky are having with getting it as they would need to do something similar. I reckon that Foxtel will be bringing in two Sport Channels in HD as they have issues like today (Monday Night NRL and 5th Day Ashes Test if it were on) to broadcast two sport in HD which they would. They would probably add some other HD channels like having a general entertainment channel go to HD where CSI/Lost etc are shown in HD to compete with Channel 9/Seven HD/10 HD/ SBS HD.

Also those watching Sky Sport 3 would have noticed the bandwidth allocation on SS3 has recently been increased.

Yeah, I think the model that Sky did where SS1 and SS2 are in HD worked out very well, so often they have had HD sport on both channels.

Yeah, I too noticed that the bandwidth for SS3 has crept up now towards 4,500 Kb/s or so.  I see it's gone from 544x576 to 720x576 in the last little while too, as has SS3

How do you manage to see the bit rates?? I always was wondering what bit rate it was originally and what it is now but couldn't figure out how to do it. Also when did the resolution change occur?

some software and such will show you the bitrate of the stream. DVB Viewer has it in the bottom right of the screen.

Must not be that long since it's changed over, I see something from SS2 on 25 Jul still was in 544x576.  Exactly when, I have no idea.

When I spoke to the Sky 'sales' team on the weekend they had no idea about another satelite and even less about the mentioned channels becoming HD. Of course I dont believe for one second the front line staff would know about upcoming changes, but thats what I was told.

As for the football Ashnizzle, I have a vested interest in the Champions League but ESPN have lost the rights to show it in the US and Ive yet to find out whether it will be on NZ screens this year. I agree the ESPN quality is appauling so it would be great to have it on the Sky channels as normal in HD, but it will be a big surprise if it is.

If they had Discovery/ESPN in HD, would they be able to also downscale it to SD and send it out in widescreen?

Wills1: Hope so! my LNB has been upgraded already

I had HD installed yesterday and they installed a quad LNB and left a leaflet explaining D# will be up by the middle of the year and there will be more channels :)

Good grief. I hope that pamphlet is wrong considering that it has already passed the middle of this year. I hope we are not going to have to wait until the middle of next year.

adamj: I live in an apartment (MDU) where a single satellite is split to the 6 apartments in the building. I wonder how this will work for us, as running now cabling from the disk to each apartment is probably not going to be possible

They would have to either run multiple coaxes to a set of Diseqc switches, or use freq shifters to put them all on the same coax.

Hmmmm

allstarnz: I already have SkyHDi, and those channels would be a big improvement.

I suspect that they will share those channels on an AU/NZ transponder to save bandwidth? There are no rights issues with any of these channels, so it would make sense.

How would you allow them to be decrypted by both sets of smart cards, unless the cards are of the same type. As far as i am aware they are not.

as long as your card entitlements allowed it, I don't see the problem. Both Sky and Foxtel use ND$.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. The Aurora feeds on Optus C1 have it set so that both Irdeto 1 and Irdeto 2 smartcards with the right entitlements can decrypt the feed.

I may be wrong though, my knowledge of such matters isn't that high.

I had Nat Geo HD in the UK and it was the best channel for showing off HD IMO, just stunning.

I miss Nat Geo HD :( and the Extreme Channel......
