As I said its "in my opinion" that I dont give a toss about extra features when we are lacking HD content which is the main reason I subscribed to the MySky box.

I would assume you checked what you were getting when you signed up to MySky, then you would of known what you were getting before you got it.
As far as I know, Sky have never said they promised they were going to add more HD channels/content at any particular time.

I do like the "record me" feature. would be handy on the few times I watch ads

Unfortunately I dont have a mysky and use an HTPC instead :)

wouldthis feature still work if one were using a sky card in a card reader attached to an htpc or do you have to be using skys crappy clunky epg?

i think record me sounds amazing, being able to record a program by hitting "Record" during its tv commerical. i doubt it will be available for every channel (tv1, 2 etc), but thats really impressive.

i still hate sky though :D

Does anyone know if this will work when watching a recorded program? Or is it just live? If only live then it kind of defeats the object of using it on MySky.

I'm still waiting for local network streaming from the Ethernet port, and an iPhone guide with remote bookings (like Sky UK)

But, how absolutely underwhelming -

Now, had sky announced network media playing from a server pc via ethernet, then I'd be more enthused.

Sky do have some massive threats in the longer term - as soon as the next generation broadband (fibre network) is installed to more than 90% of the population, then the telcos can begin to compete on a more even basis.

Until then, Sky can enjoy their monopoly.

You might want to read todays NZ Herald article - what your talking about is around 10 years away.

and Sky have a monopoly on the content so it's not really a threat for them. If they are sensible and the network allows them to guarantee a reliable service then they will start selling streamed content.

+1 - evidenced whenever you try to call them about something - they don't give a RA about customer service - and I reckon it's because they have no competition.

They are rolling it out the masses in the first week of July with all STB's complete by the end of July according to the FAQ on the Sky website.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

If in doubt try looking up other countries cable/sky type offerings and value for dollar. I am sure you will find worse....but I am only generalising. Also perhaps view todays article in NZ Herald.

A monopoly in itself is neither illegal, nor grounds for regulation - what is illegal is utilising that monopoly in a manner that harms competition (such as using their considerable reserves to buy FTA rights for every program under the sun so TVNZ and MediaWorks can't air them).

Otherwise, every company in an industry with a higher than usual barrier to entry would have to be regulated as no other company wants to expend the capital to enter the market.

Lias: Where's things like enabling the LAN & USB ports on the box, allowing playback of avi/mkv/etc files from USB, streaming of mysky content over the local network, etc etc.
That's the sort of features I want to see my mysky, turn it into a total networked media centre.

It's a pity that Sky didn't take the opportunity to refresh the UI. The current grey theme is drab and I don't know why the UI isn't 16:9 rather than 4:3 which just ends up looking stretched on a HDTV. The Sky+ UI in the UK is very nice and I'm pretty certain it's built on the same platform with similar hardware. Here's a screenshot:

Much nicer, eh! Note how it uses more of the screen real estate and the timeline indicates whether a program started prior to the current view (e.g. see the small arrow pointing to the left on Britain's Got Talent). The blue is much nicer, too.

I prefer the silver style, but take your point on a 16:9 layout. Much better use of the newer TV's. But unfortunately NZ is 5 years away from a digital switch over and that suggest the majority of people still have 4:3 screen. Need Stats NZ to confirm...

Going back to the UK example, I have always looked at BSB for the way forward and actually think SkyNZ have over taken the dated looking EPG. (Never thought i'd hear myself say that!)

Small steps are better than none and while an eSATA / USB / LAN enabled box would be great, I'm happy this free upgrade will be available in a couple days and look forward to the next update that includes them :)
