Does only the blue Sky card work in this box?
I would like to get one for my parents but they have a gold card.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

NZCoderGuy: So if one brought this, they would be still paying $25 (standard decoder costs) + $15 decoder upgrade each month, as the MySky decoder card is different to the standard one. Ours was swapped when we upgraded.

Sounds like you have multi room if your paying $25/month for decoder costs.

Buying this will not reduce your sky bill in any way, you will still pay what you are currently.  All it does is give you more features in place of your mysky hdi decoder, eg bigger hard drive.

Only blue cards with smartcard number beginning with a group of four zeros, found in all mysky decoders, and also some small silver pace boxes.  if it doesnt have the group of four zeros then it will not work.

Hmm, lets work through this....

If you have a base sky decoder then hopefully your card will slot straight in.
This gives you the ability to record the sky channels.

If you have my sky only for recording ability then this could be an alternative.
Price is about the same as my sky anyway though.

If you have a need for HD from SKY then you'll need the my sky box anyway, to get the HD ticket.
Good question, would this box show the HD SKY content if you had an appropriate card?

So they should sign up for MySky for a month then cancel it and go back to standard Sky?
Or would they be given the wrong type of card back again?

No the $25 is the standard price for the normal vanilla decoder.. then theres a surcharge of $15 on top for MySky HDi decoder upgrade

If you are cheeky enough, you could ask the sky installer for a small silver pace box with a blue card (same cards as mysky) that would work, saves you having to pay extra just to get a blue card.  Have seen quite a few of those small silver pace boxes around wtih blue cards, also known as 45xx cards, the silver box is the only one that takes both cards.  The non compatible type are also known as 17xx cards.

Really? I just checked on their website and it says $51.54 per month for standard decoder

We have our through a legacy deal with Telecom, its slightly cheaper but not anywhere close to $25. From memory its around $40.

ahh ok my bad then.. i though the break down of costs was more like:
$25 standard decoder
$26ish for Basic package
= $51ish for basic sky

if you want MySky its an extra $15 a month..
$25 + $26 + $15 = $65

I currently have 2x MySkys, 1x Movies package, 1x HD ticket
$25 + $26 + $15 + $25 + $15 + $20 = $126 a month - which is what my monthly cost is at present - not sure exactly.. oh well it doesnt really matter LOL

quote Sky's website:
"PLUS you’ll receive the HD Ticket included in the Multiroom subscription" when you purchase Multi-Room HDi - you get the $10 HD Ticket for free.

DS9: Sky are going to offer an HDD like TIVO's by the end of the year

Huh? - Isn't that what mysky is?
(or do you mean can download content sort of style?)

In regards to costs,
It's $50 min for base sky and I don't think this is necessarily based on $25 or so of it being the controller box cost.
It's $25 for another decoder, and an extra $15 (is it?) if you want that extra controller to be a mysky box.
(This also assumes your first main controller is a mysky unit)

Sky wise, I think this box is only really for those who want to add hard drive capability to a basic sky box.
Or as an alternative room unit for freeview, that can take the SKY card if for any reason you want to be able to view sky in that alternative location.  Perhaps if you want SKY multiroom but only for a while?.

I know if I had one for freeview use, it would be nice to think people with SKY could bring their card over for selected events sort of thing.

I used to bring my SKY card over to my folks place, so we could unlock the movies channels - worked well.. even recently took one of my MySky units over and it worked immediately. :)

DS9 - what's the story with the additional MySkyHDi HDD?  I'm seriously considering an upgrade to MySkyHDi, but the limited HDD is a serious worry, and one of the current sticking points.

Shoud I wait for the larger HDD, or is it likely to be a firmware update to enable the addition of an external drive through the USB?

Cheers,
Looking Up
