Just to repeat again the Sky notes are wrong, BOTH THE MYSKY HDI and HDI+ can do 3D.

But that's exactly what Sky are saying: "Please note that the 3D feed will be HD so you will need a My SKY HDi/My SKY + decoder with subscription to the HD ticket and SKY Sport package to gain access."

maybe no more 3D soon too?? ouch.

Nooo !!! Not yet !!! Admittedly, the pricing at the arena-style showings were pretty expensive ( $400+ for all semi and finals), but the theatre style 3D is well affordable for all sessions.

Saw the 3D road-show - pretty damn awesome!!!

Yeah, I was impressed with the roadshow. But the tickets are WAY over-priced.

that is only for the cinema type showings.  AFAIK, sky will definitely be doing RWC in 3D

I am pleased to see that SKY now has a much clearer statement about the situation on their website which reads follows:

What do I need to view the Rugby World Cup finals in 3D?

MY SKY HDi and MY SKY+ are both 3D ready. Customers with SKY Sport, the HD Access Ticket and a 3D capable television will be able to view 3D Rugby World Cup 2011 coverage of two semi finals, playoff for third place and the Final.

https://skytv.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1336/kw/my%20sky%20Hdi%203D

I would like to thank all those who posted replies to my question, it's much appreciated.

Regards
Fred

p.s. SKY does not refer to the new higher capacity decoder as MY SKY HDi + as you might expect! The new box is simply called "My SKY +"

Didn't the original marketing state the 'i' stood for Internet, implying some sort of on-line connectivity.  I guess that idea has been shelved.

I thought that some games were to be captured in 3D regardless of if Sky or the "Event screenings" happend as overseas broadcasters wanted 3D, hard to tell from the stuff article exactly what is or not happening other than "Event screenings".

From the RWC website news: http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/mediazone/news/newsid=2044598.html#rwcl+confirms+2011+broadcast+plans

....Features will include wirecam technology for key matches, 5.1 surround sound and the use of changing room cameras for the first time at a Rugby World Cup.

Previous plans to produce 3D coverage of key matches from the Tournament, including the Final, have been reluctantly cancelled after it was confirmed that the production company 3D Live, is no longer able to meet its production commitments.

RWCL Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “On confirmation of 3D Live’s position, we explored every option to try to make production viable. However, with so little time remaining before the tournament kicks off we all agreed that cancelling the 3D programme was the most appropriate decision for the Tournament. We have kept our broadcast partners informed and they fully understand the rationale behind this difficult decision.”

“However, the decision does not affect the delivery of a quality host broadcast feed. Fans watching Rugby World Cup 2011 on TV will be able to enjoy every try, tackle and pass from all 48 matches in glorious High Definition, while Sky New Zealand’s world class production will also feature wirecam technology for key matches and changing room cameras for the first time at a Rugby World Cup.”.....
