I have heard that some of the final rugby world cup matches will be broadcast in 3D. I understand that the existing MySky boxes cannot receive 3D broadcasts and that it's only the new MySky+ boxes that can receive 3D broadcasts. Can anyone confirm please that this is in fact the case?

Also, will the new MySky+ recorders be able to record in 3D and playback in 3D, video that was broadcast in 3D?

Thanks for your reply. I think it's really important for people who own 3D TVs to know for sure whether or not the existing MySky boxes will receive and record 3D broadcasts.

I have just phoned SKY and I was told that ONLY the new MySky+ boxes are 3D ready. It was explained to me that the existing boxes will NOT be able to receive 3D broadcasts.

Incidentally, I was also told that the new MySky+ boxes will be able to record 3D broadcasts and play them back in 3D.

I realise that many 3D TVs have a "simulated" 3D TV option, and this of course works with non 3D broadcasts. However, I am a bit disappointed with simulated 3D, it certainly doesn't produce the "illusion" of depth that you get from watching a "true" 3D DVD.

Incidentally, when buying a 3D DVD it's important to check on internet whether the video was actually filmed with 3D cameras or whether it was filmed in 2D and later "remanufactured" to create a simulated type of 3D. I have found that only the DVDs actually filmed with 3D cameras truly provide the best 3D experience.

HDMI 1.3 won't support 3D.

Indications are 1.3a,b,b1,c does.

All depends of course on how Sky will broadcast the 3D.

Zolly's right - both the MySKY HDi and MySKY+ have the same capabilities for 3d. The 3d signal will be broadcast as HD side-by-side and you'll need to manually switch your 3d-capable TV into 3d mode. The UIs are still 2d so you don't want to be bringing up the banner. As the side-by-side signal is just standard HD you can record it and use trick modes as normal.

Unfortunately that advice was incorrect. By announcing the 3d capability in the MySKY+ press release SKY have inadvertantly given the impression that the functionality is new in the MySKY+, but it is not. It looks as though SKY Customer Service haven't been given the information that they need to answer queries accurately.

I was certainly under that impression too, and was disappointed as I got mysky hdi just recently and didn't want to have to fork out again.

However I wouldn't mind betting that sky may only enable the 3D channel for mysky+ customers.

Are the HDI boxes HDMI 1.4? because if they are not then they are not really "3D ready"? I would assume that the mysky+ box is 1.4.

I suppose the question is then will sky give hdi users the ability to see the 3D channels or will they force people to go to mysky + so they can get some extra revenue

For the RWC, you need the Sky Sport package, as well as the HD ticket.
That's about it to my knowledge, I believe it isn't pay per view.

So, this is definite enough for me, I will order a MySky+ box so that I can receive 3D broadcasts.

Can you just turn on the HD ticket for just a month or 2? Would be keen to see the final in 3D but dont want to have to get it for a long period of time

This to me sounds like either an HDi box or the new MySky+ one would work for 3D.
