In the above conversations we dont seem to worry about the Netflix app going out of date or not keeping up with TV changes, if they can do it why cannot Sky deliver a similar experience.

And yes I do understand that SkyTV NZ has a much much much smaller customer base, but if we take the Netflix model, why cannot Sky follow.

That's exactly the problem - it's not sustainable for Sky to maintain or create apps on older / more obscure TV models. Netflix is the exception, not the rule when it comes to support for older platforms, almost every app in NZ lacks in this regard. Hell, Neon only supports (relatively) late model Samsung and Panasonic TV's, which if applied to this new Sky app leaves a lot of people that can't be serviced by this app.

Totally agree. Been saying that since 2014 when I got my first smart TV which Panasonic has not updated since then. A really good dumb monitor 4k or 8k, HDMI eARC, plus 5 more HDMI, a couple of USB and a TOC, maybe WiFi & AirPlay 2 for those who just want to display photos, sort of like a moving picture frame. All you do then is hang any box or boxes you want off it.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Or a high quality monitor with one hdmi and put everything else you want into, or attached to, a receiver.

Smart TVs are mainly just a marketing gimmick to those who don't know better. It took me two years to get around to looking at the smart functions on my Sony, and by then they were already obsolete. Not that there was anything worth looking at anyway, except for YouTube, which was much better by other means. I unplugged the Internet from it and have used it as a dumb monitor ever since. It is very good for that.

I don't agree with this "...mainly just a marketing gimmick to those who don't know better" There are folk that just do not want to stuff around with this box or that box, this dongle or that dongle and and and and, life is just too busy for something that should be a non think about service. Also try and find a non smart TV, they are non existent unless you go for a computer monitor which are just too small.

There is certainly something to what you say, but not all of us can afford to buy a new TV every two years. And why bother? The expensive part of a TV is the panel and the electronics that drive it. Internet connectivity is just a minor afterthought. It makes a lot more sense to me to split the functions and replace the far cheaper Internet box as necessary than the TV, which usually still works perfectly.

The much criticized Sky Satellite service just keeps on going and can provide TV service to probably 100% of the country with out the need for anything more than Dish and HDMi port. IPTV will not be able to close to that coverage. IPTV will work for a big percentage of city folk but not all Kiwis live in cities as I now you are painfully aware of.

That was probably the case with my Sony, but I waited too long. Note to @MikeB4: As you must know, I am a long way from any city and have had a lot of frustration with my ISP. But with my new ISP life is sweet and I can stream anything I like. IPTV is not an issue. In fact, it is now my preferred means of reception for FTA. The only time I now use my other alternatives at all (aerial and satellite) are when I want to see something on Prime or Choice, neither of which offer streaming services. That isn't very often with all the other options out there.

What’s the Apple Watch ruling?

Earlier in the year a guy took Noel Leeming to the disputes tribunal because his 1st gen Apple watch doesn't get the latest watchos updates as Apple no longer support it. Noel Leeming claimed the product was fully functional and still worked as it did when the product was purchased (which technically it does). Disputes tribunal ruled in his favour and said 3 years was not an acceptable time for a watch to be supported.

Samsung had the right idea at one stage with their upgradeable Evolution kit. But most interest these days appears to be pushing bigger higher res panels.

We're about to go through this all again as people bring 8K sets to market to try to beat/meet fifth gen consoles so I'm not sure what the right thing to do here is.

As long as I knew I could fall back on something like Chrome and still get the optimum resolution, I'd be happy.
