xpd: Just tell them that you found some of their equipment on your property, they come get it/send courier within 72 hours, otherwise itll be sitting out on the roadside in the rain.

I wouldn't discount that they could then charge you with willful damage to their equipment. Remember - it is a corporate you are taking on, not the corner dairy.

But if youve told them its not yours (and the OPs name/address is not associated to the box in any way) then its their responsibility to come get it.

I do know of someone who threatened to do such a thing and Sky turned up very quickly to pick up their gear....

The box would be useless even to existing Sky subscribers. Even the pause and rewind features refuse to work unless the card inserted into it belongs to an account that is subscribed to MySky. And to subscribe to MySky, you'd need to pay for the box, so nothing to be gained. If Sky don't pick it up, it's just a paperweight.

The "someone else" would pay him for packaging, shipping and the effort so it would not cost him a cent. Anyway, a Sky staff member already posted here he is in the process of getting it picked up. I would have been happy paying for the MySky to be sent to me, take care of it for a while until I get a Vu+ Duo, then pass it on to Sky 500m from my work. "Doing the right thing" does not necessarily have to be posted here, it can be sorted off-line long before anyone here judges the OP (which is where I explained to him why Sky is so much more interested in the card than the box).

Yes to the HDMI part, but no it would not give you the FTA channels in HD -- if you insert a Sky card linked to a 'standard' account into a MySky HDi box it will only pick up the same SD FTA channels as the normal Sky boxes. Only a card linked to a 'MySky HDi' account will pick up the HD versions.

Reason I know this is when I got MySky HDi the tech forgot to call Sky to activate the HDi profile before leaving our premises, and at first all we got was regular 'TV One', 'TV2' and SD pictures, and features like pause, record and rewind did not work - pressing the buttons threw up errors on-screen saying I was not subscribed to those features. When I called Sky, they spotted the error and completed the cut-over to the HDi profile, at which stage the box reset and when it came back on the channels were then called 'TV One HD', 'TV2 HD' etc and the pause / rewind features began to work.

No - we're not. We're being realists and helping stop you getting burnt by listening to the wrong person/people!

Just because one person told you something does mean you've been given the right information, and if push came to shove that you would get off scott free. If you went down the path that others want you too it wouldn't stop Sky potentially reporting you to the police as having their property. Then you are in a bit of a mess that you would have to get yourself out of. We are trying to help you not get into that mess!!! Rather than calling us rude, you should be thanking us!

As you've already found out, Sky do indeed want the box back, hence you were given bad info by the first person you spoke to.

You might be a student, BUT you were telling earlier you have a job with cheap freight - we go off the facts you've given, that's all.

1) We do not know what information he was given off-line, but information he was initially given by Sky was to throw it away so nothing can be worse than that.
2) It is not worth it for Sky to have the bad PR to report him to the police as he will tell all his friend, family, and GeekZoners.
3) He could tell Sky or the police who has it, so simply make sure he has all the details and confirm it with the White Pages and a phone call to confirm the new "owner's" details, then he is covered. Come to a written agreement the new "owner" will take care of dropping it off at Sky on behalf of the original owner that fled the country, who is the one ultimately responsible as the one with the contract with Sky.
4) A Sky employee said here days ago they will arrange for it to be picked up without even knowing where he is, might be in a very remote location where in fact they do not have any installer at present (or maybe they do, we don't know).
5) Sky is apparently already sorting this out.
6) There is nothing on an STB to say who it belongs to or who to contact if you find it next to the road (e.g.). Not even the card which is the core of it's security says anything. It is only branded Sky (international) and only the person with a contract with Sky knows it is the property of Sky TV NZ. And even then, I know many people who paid $600 for MySky and never realised they do not own it until they were asked to return it.
