I was being serious, and IMHO what I said is a reasonable compromise between the two extremes of the media controlled environment we have now, and total freedom of information with no IP laws. We need some balance, and the power needs to swing much further away from the media companies than it is now.

richms: I am saying that anything that forces them to rethink regonalized delayed release of things online is a good thing. [snip for dramatic effect]

So....

The ends justify the means then?

Taking the legal rights of an owner of content (media companies, etc) away will never happen.  Its dreaming.

Does anyone know if there is a list of content for Neon anywhere?  The website seems limited.  Might be interested in getting it for a couple of months to catch up on stuff I missed (mostly movies).  From my quick scan is it is all older stuff which is sad.  I am super keen to ditch Sky but All Blacks games are a major selling point.....still not sure the approx $1,200 a year I pay is worth it.....be cheaper to go to the pub 13 times including getting boozed....

Be pretty marginal, given the cost of beer at the pub, and a bite to eat. If you got boozed, Sky is probably cheaper, and safer

richms: I am saying that anything that forces them to rethink regonalized delayed release of things online is a good thing. If the impossibility to buy something means that they cannot show any loss then there will be no point taking people to the tribunal. If they release to the second on all platforms then there would be a loss for pirated content so they have an incentive to do it.

Based on some informal conversations I had at IBC a while ago, the major studios (or at least their line managers) are definitely aware of the public's desire to have simultaneous world-wide release and are keen to evolve to the model, however they cited numerous contractual, political and financial stumbling blocks that need to be overcome first. It became obvious during the conversation that the studios really have had their heads in the sand for quite some time over this issue and continue to some extent in that position.

Interestingly they all were adamant that there should be reasonable theatrical release and streaming/physical media release.

And neither lightbox or neon are available on smart TV's... So I'm picking short lives for both.

No HD, crap (IMO) selection and they want $20 per month. No thanks.

What's the selling point here vs. the competition?

Great news for Samsung, but Lightbox will need to be on more smart TVs promptly if they are to survive commercially. I qualify for 12 months free lightbox, but even this is not enough to tempt me as I can't be bothered with any service I can't access directly through my Panaonic smart TV. Bet you Netflix will be available on the Panny from day one.

So it looks as it my "crazy ideas" may not be so crazy.

http://torrentfreak.com/eu-commissioner-wants-to-abolish-netflix-geoblocking-150227/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Torrentfreak+%28Torrentfreak%29

The EU wants to outlaw geoblocking, and ignore regional content licensing restrictions..

I've been tempted by Neon, purely for Game of Thrones.

Then I remembered that I have read all the books, so there is really no hurry.

the TV series has already diverged quite a bit from the books, and will do so a lot more this season and next.

Having GoT did make me think twice, but I won't be getting Neon yet for 2 reasons.

1) no HD
2) no PS3 or PS4 app.

Once they get both of those things sorted I probably will subscribe alongside Lightbox and Netflix  (all three together would still be only $46/month, which is still less than just Sky Basic)

Their latest ploy with offering GOT as it airs actually has piqued our interest. It sucks that it's SD only, but when we watch it on Soho its in SD anyway, as we don't have the HD ticket.

Having it on Neon should finally give me a shot at getting the wife to relinquish her grasp on their woefully overpriced traditional service. Watching GOT in a timely manner has been her primary argument for not wanting to ditch it.

Then again, HBOs new service may be a better deal for us, once it launches. It'll probably be in HD, and I wouldn't expect it to cost more than Neon.

The deviation has been enough to turn me off it now.
