Will you be signing up?

After having a quick look at the selection, nothing really impresses me, and it's in SD and only available on Computer, iPad or iPhone.

I have to agree.  Nothing overly appealing in the Neon line up.  I think Telecom have a better line up and they don't even have movies.

Be interesting to see what Netflix has to offer.

When I google 'Neon' or 'Neon TV' it doesn't come up on the first page, instead you get stuff articles about the service.

You would think they would have got neon.co.nz , neon.nz, or neontv.nz , neon.tv, as they are all the urls I tried initially when searching for their website.

No pricing informtion on their website until you go to the FAQs. What does it cost, it is free for the 1st 30 days....oh and then it's $20 per month after that. Too much for ancient movies, and b grade tv. Lightboxes content is far superior. You have to give lightbox some kudos as to securing some of their newer content .

SVOD via mySky HDi/+ will be free but has not started as yet. Neon is intended for people who don't pay for Sky.

I find pretty much all the current offers for NZ consumers (excluding dns unblock/vpn to overseas content) to be pretty meh.

We need a government to legislate for the digital/copyright/intellectual property equivalent of both parallel importing and unbundling. Pass some laws like this:

  • If content is not legally available in NZ, pirating it is completely legal.
  • If content is available cheaper elsewhere in the world, companies must offer it in NZ at that price or pirating it is completely legal.
  • No exclusive rights to content, if content is legally available in NZ, it must be available at the same price to all companies who wish to provide it to their customers
That would solve all our content problems immediately :-) Probably get us on a US piracy watch list, and if that traitorous prick in the beehive signs the TPPA it would get us sued by big media, but it's pretty much the only way I can see of ensuring that big multinational media companies cannot keep screwing us over.

Lightbox is limited to TV, no movies, so hardly superior content.

And neither lightbox or neon are available on smart TV's... So I'm picking short lives for both.

NZ cannot legislate for other countries and effect the legal rights of foreign entities. If Disney don't want to sell a product here they don't have to, if they chose to sell it here they have the right to set the price they wish for it.

After looking through the menu there is not enough to warrant $20 per month.

Amazed these people can't get it right. Holding out for the last sky subscription.

Here in Oz, we have "Stan" and "Presto". Free first month for both. One is partially owned by fairfax/channel 9 one partially owned by foxtel/channel 7.

Haven't looked at Presto yet as it's EDIT: $10 a month, but Stan is $10, basically netflix-style. Some stuff in HD, some not. Older movies and newer TV like "better call saul" (which I'm not interested in).

They're feeling the Netflix pressure here.

Neon might be missing from Smart TVs but Lightbox is working very well on my 2013 Samsung with their app plus iPad and Android works. The latest update also remembers last watched position. This is a killer for me if I can't use it direct from my TV remote and Neon isn't there yet.
