freitasm: Come on folks. I don't have Sky but I can see if there would be an event of interest and I wanted to put on the big screen at home I could - without having to go through the whole subscription thing.

It's a good thing (TM).

Nice to see Sky moving in the right direction.

I might get the daily pass for occasional events (test match cricket) and I assume it is a 24 hour pass from the time of subscription.

I hope this eventuates to where I could buy a "Black Caps subscription" where I can watch all BC games for a season or series etc.

I think this is a great move on Sky's part. Price is reasonable.

Let's be honest, nearly everything on Sky is trash making the $960 / year basic+sport package a complete rip.

960 / 15 = 64... So you could use Fan Pass one day a week all year long and you'll still come out with some cash in your pocket.

I just jumped on Fan Pass and indeed it's running the NeuLion flash player. While I was streaming I saw the data coming from the Limelight CDN cluster in Sydney.

This could be problematic for some users where their ISP congests their international heavily.

Yeah, I'd pay $150 - $200 for the RWC (especially being able to watch "on demand").

I think Sky is figuring out that this is allowing them revenue from people who wouldn't otherwise be subscribers.

What fps do most online channels stream at these days? I find HD videos on YouTube on the TV via 50 fps video card give me headaches after 30 minutes as it's so jerky. It looks like 10 fps to me.

My concern is that if this works out for them, we'll end up with "premium" sports being channelled through this medium only.
I am thinking Champions League football, World Cups etc, where they pay a premium to have the rights to air a competition and therefore pass on those costs beyond the normal subscription fees.
This could be either a great business model or a horribly slippery slope.

Sky's history of looking after its subscribers isn't great, so I would not be surprised to see anything of worth being shifted to pop-up channels on Fan Pass.
As it is, you can't see any decent boxing live these days without a pay-per-view deal that's beyond expensive for what you get.

It's a good thing (TM).

It is, and there have been many posts about overseas sports streaming that have sumilar daily and weekly costs. $20 for a week, or a few wereks is cheaper than Sky Basic + Sports + HD ticket + MySky for one year. My bill is $99-74 x 12. Thats a lot of money saved even if I bought regular weeks.

Could a weekly pass cover 2 All Blacks tests? E.g. Sat 8pm kick off in Sydney (10pm NZ), then the next Sat 7:30pm kick off in NZ.

It would work if it was 7 days from the minute you start, rather than Sat-Fri.

One would hope that someone there would realise that a multi year long subscriber would be better to keep happy than a potential one off customer who will leave at the drop of the hat if you don't have a product that is the right price, right time etc

And also realise that a lot of their core customers can't be bothered with having to have up to 3 pieces of equipment + problem solving with software and caching etc all the time.

I'm interested to find out how it works as I'm dropping Sky Sports as of Sunday (after the game) and was planning on watching Prime for the RWC as I read that they are showing the AB's games live from the Quarter Finals onwards. One thing I'm not sure about is whether it will start live and then get delayed with adverts at various inappropriate moments throughout the game.
