First thing I thought of when I saw this, is where is the money coming from??

TVNZ as an SOE wouldn't have a lot of cash I would have thought, so maybe the bulk of the cash is coming from Spark?

I'd be guessing Live games through a Spark\Neon subscription, and delayed coverage on TVNZ, of selected matches.

That's why, despite the Sky hate, bundling works. All in one place works. Its more efficient cost wise and its easier user wise

And it's only going to get worse. Sky may die, but as a consumer are you going to be any better off if you're paying a separate sub for Rugby, Cricket, League, Basketball, World Darts, F1, Supercars, MotoGP, WRC, Movies?

I'd wager no.

And as I've said before, if a single provider (e.g. Netflix\Amazon) is the rights holder to say 3 of the above scenario's, I as a consumer would only want 1 payment and 1 account to manage, but that's a whole separate topic.

If there was only one, say Amazon, the pricing isnt going to change, as they will pay what Sky pays. Or they might have less sport so we save, then pay it back on an extra sub or two

So, shares down 8%, fair enough also silly as Sky will make money from not having RWC. Now if it lost rugby...., well thats on the cards if they lose end of year AB's. That leaves local rugby, as you can bet that AB's might be the target for TVNZ/Spark. I'd almost like to see no rugby on Sky, drop prices to reflect no rugby rights, as it seems rugger will be free from now on! Free for us anyway, someone has to write a cheque somewhere

for those wishing for a Sky demise think for a bit. They directly employ in excess of 1,200 people. The job losses would be greater than that as it would affect more than just sky. It would also leave 90%+ of our TV entertainment in off shore hands who don't really give a toss about a market that is a rounding error. Having said that SkyTV has assets in excess of $1 billion and credit lines probably close to that, they can ride this out if they innovate which I hope they do.

Criticising sky management is not the same as wanting them to go out of business. And, if sky are not innovating they only have themselves to blame. Sky online services are a joke, they need to hang their heads in shame over that.

Last time I had sky, i was still required to mail in my credit card details after my old one expired.

A number of industries are in similar positions where disruptive technology threatens traditional business model.

I give sky a 40% chance of survival long term. I certainly wouldn't buy shares in them with a long term outlook. Too risky.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. With due respect, you have no insight as to what a future provider might charge, or how options will be bundled. You are guessing at best.

In what way? Sky had exclusive rights for the last RWC (2015) only. However all the AB games pool games were on a slight delay and the QF onwards were screened live on Prime. If the rumours of a Spark / TVNZ turn out that Lightbox will have the exclusive live rights that means everyone who wants to watch the ABs live will have to pay a fee (and you can bet it is going to be more the then $12.90 per month that Lightbox currently charge)

How? I have Sky, I will watch RWC for free still Sky will pocket money from avoiding the RWC. If all matches are online but main matches on TVNZ how do non savvy people get around that? Some might have to pay for Lightbox to access every game.

You are assuming that the sports rights holders will take a reduction to allow cheaper sport. The rights holders wont do that, so unless a new sports provider cuts content, they will face the same rights costs. Skys transmission costs amount to $8 per subscriber per month, so thats nit going to be the holy grail of cost savings.

Also with due respect, you seem to feel that because its Sky its aa rort. No one can hide from the cost of sport.

No matter how options are bundled, and yes I dont know how they might do that, but it all still comes down to the mighty dollar, that wont go away.

Correction: Only two quarter finals and one semi final were live in 2015.

In 2019, as a non-Sky subscriber, I will have access to ALL games live. And I'm more than happy to pay a one-off cost to view the tournament, rather than be forced into a lengthy term contract with Sky for all sport, when all I want to do is just watch the RWC.

Thats right, and that will apply to many as well. I feel if there was a charge that many will baulk at that. I assume thats for the non FTA games. Some may need to also subsribe to Lightbox. Some may need to ask what streaming is and maybe have to buy a box for that. Or shift the old tower case PC into the living room. NO HDMI cable? Now what? Off course that wont affect anyone here, but I can see many who will have to make an effort to make it work to see all games

Whats a fair fee for 6 weeks of the non FTA games? $49-95 sounds like a nice cheap price?

I'm often in areas that have no or very limited internet access. So if it goes to Lightbox or some other steaming service, I guess I wont be seeing the 2019 RWC. I loose.

It's an absolute win for me as a non-SKY subscriber as I will now have live access to all 2019 RWC games, something I did not have in 2015. Maybe a one-off fee for the tournament, but for me this is far preferable to locking into a term contract with Sky that continues long after the tournament's close.

So, where's my logic flaw?
