Rushmere:

WyleECoyoteNZ: Well done Sky, you've taken over a product and made it worse.

2 main issues:
1) Requires a satellite dish, why? If they are able to provide Vodafone TV over the internet, why can't the new box do this? Seems to be a backward step to me.

2) Why can the Pod Watch Live or From the Start, but the Box can't. And the box can't scroll back, but the Pod can Another backward step

I suspect the Sky Pod was a bit of an afterthought when the Vodafone TV issue emerged, and has been put together hastily to fill a gap. The Sky Box has probably been in development longer, and scrolling back wasn't part of the specification at that point.

It does seem a bit weird to not allow the Sky Box to operate without a satellite dish.

I wonder if they'll add these missing capabilities to the Sky Box at a later date?

You almost need to be able to plug both devices into each other for the ideal solution.

As far as I can work out satellite delivered content means that some content (but not all) can be recorded to a Hard Drive/SSD for later viewing but streamed content can not.

Remember that the introduction of Vodafone TV had a big argument regarding a lot of content could not be recorded that was available previously to do so.

OldGeek:

I recall seeing an earlier announcement that the new Sky box would not require a Sat feed - that it could be internet-only.  As I am in a location with Fibre and frequent rain-fade when it rains so I paid attention to this.  However no mention in todays email.

Someone pointed out earlier that this appeared to be a journalist misinterpretation of what was said by Sky about the Skybox.

The Skypod is an attempt to keep the VTV customers who also subscribe to Sky content via VTV but are not willing or unable to go to satellite to view that content. This fits me.

Aaron2222:

Shame the new Sky Box doesn't have the reverse EPG of the Sky Pod.

That seems a shocking ommission.

I suppose they thought that the ability to record on the Skybox negated that need. Strange though

Can someone post the sky pod register link? Thanks

It's in the first post.

Not that I can see. Only a link for the new Sky Box.

Picture of SkyPod seems to show USB-C and RJ45 (Ethernet) ports but no HDMI?  Could be hidden on the other side of the puck? Would be a significant omission if no HDMI (i.e. adapters needed) ....

Sorry, you are right. The text says:

"The first phase of the Sky Pod roll-out is for customers who currently access Sky via VodafoneTV, for a one-off fee of $100. Sky will contact VodafoneTV customers directly prior to the closure of the service to offer the Sky Pod or a Sky Box to ensure they can keep enjoying Sky."

Isn't the cable sticking out the back of the Pod the HDMI plug?

That looks to be squared off (i.e. USB-A for power like Chromecasts etc) rather than the HDMI shape?

Contrary to some misapprehension, once you pay the $200 outright or the monthly $10, you own the box outright

JoBudge: How many boxes can be used on one account? We currently have six boxes on six tv's. It was a cheap way (on sale with The Market discounts) for us to have sky on multiple tvs and record facility across a very large property with old not smart tv's which were high quality but all 10 years or older. So VF TV essentially upgraded them to have youtube, Netflix and Neon for streaming without needing Google Chrome.

Also @jiriteach this is what I got from Sky:

Six boxes per account is the standard limit (however we are happy to talk with individuals who may want more than this).

Each new Sky Box will cost $200, our most loyal customers will be contacted with a special offer on this price for their first box.

The Pod looks like it should replace VTV for us (I watch enough sport that I need it, and my wife likes watching the E and TLC type channels on Starter). Would like some confirmation as to whether the FTA channels will also be available to stream and catchup via the Guide like with VTV.
