pjamieson: Everythig still runs even though it is in standby (incl HDD), only the video output turns off in standby. Almost not worth it being off.

Pretty sure the manual says hit the power button then wait 60s before moving it to allow the HDD to stop and lock. Or is there a difference between hitting the power button (either remote or main unit) and standby?

I don't know what the manual says, don't have one and don't need one, but to spin down the HDD you need to switch off at the wall or pull the cord out. As previously stated pressing the power button puts it into standby and just cuts the video.

Yes, as tkr001 says.

I personally think this is dumb due to wear and tear, power, heat, noise etc, it SHOULD turn the HDD off during standby. Surely with all the technology in the MySkyHDI it can sense that a programme is about to record and start up it up 30 secs before recording. Or am I over-simplfying this???

Every DVD-HDD recorder I've come across powers the HDD down when not needed, and even my Vantage Freeview HD box powers down a compatible USB HDD when not required and can wake up box and drive when required for a recording, so I can't see why the HDi couldn't do the same. At least I don't need to feel guilty leaving mine powered up continuously. I have mine connected to an HDMI distribution box feeding a PJ and two TVs, plus our old 42" Panny via component. Interestingly, the HDMI distribution box remembers the EDID, even when the HDMI TVs are turned off, and the HDi then continues to allow HD over component for TV3 etc. I wonder how long this will last?

I've had a mysky1 running almost non stop for well over 2 years. Drive and everything still going good as gold.

Pretty sure most large  businesses leave their hard drives going 24/7

Mysky HDi on standby when update came in, didn't need to reset, etc to get it going just hit the standby button.

In manual says if shifting it, unplug from wall and wait about 1 minute.

If the mysky craps out my understanding is they'll replace it free of charge, so other then lost recordings not to worried about it breaking down.

brentbart: Get him to show you how to remove the cover to the remote control. Sounds silly but its a mission until you know how, as some on GZ have found.

Lol, seriously? I read about this recently here: http://www.spareroom.co.nz/2009/05/05/electrocution-and-other-choice-links/ but she was just taking the piss cos sky actually put a video on their website about how to do it, sadly it's been pulled down :( It was pretty funny too.

NickiB: Lol, seriously?

As above, I didn't even have to ask, he showed me uninvited, and it even took him a little bit of fiddling.

Haven't tried myself since but it did look like it could have been designed better.

Based on the fact that every remote in our house has its battery cover held in place by electrical tape due to general use and abuse (particularly by my male teens who seem to use them as some primeval club to subdue siblings) then this design may have more merit than first thought.

Cheers

we had another myski hdi installed the other day, installer upgraded lnb to quad, and replaced existing cable runs with dual coax cables to each location, so now each hdi has 2 feeds.

Are both Coax's connected?

Glad I checked on Geekzone before I planned my house TV cabling.
